Hi everyone, in the very near future I will be purchasing my first pistol, I have done extensive research and for what I will be using the pistol for I have narrowed it down to a p226 sig and a gen 4 glock17. I have found a 226 sig manufactured around 1996 says "made in Germany" with a U in the serial number?? Approx 2 boxes fired. For $800. The question is would this be as good as the new ones? Should I go with a new one and dish out the extra $$$Or go with the glock? Any advice will help! thanks in advance

Of the 2 you listed, I'd buy the Glock G17 for OEM and aftermarket parts availability. But, the best bang for the buck is the M&P 9 Carry and Range Kit.

Your two choices are very different pistols. Have you had a chance to try either or at least hold them? The G17 is a very good pistol but the ergonomics don't work for some people and some people find the grip circumference too large on the 226. Do you know the person who is selling the Sig? Fifty rounds seems pretty suspicious for a pistol of that vintage.

I would NEVER buy a handgun without at least holding it first, dont buy a gun based on stats or price. Buy a gun that fits your hand and the ergonomics are correct for you. If possible try shooting several different kinds before buying one because you will shoot better with one brand over another.

Before you buy anything you should figure out a way to get out and shoot a few of the various guns out there. It may mean buying some 9mm ammo and attend a few events where you observe and help out a bit and strike up some conversations. At the end of the day unless I miss my guess you'll get to try out a lot of the various guns and get advice on how to hold them so you can better evaluate them.

Many of us find that Glocks simply do not feel good in our hands. So regardless of how good a gun they might be according to the pundits on the interwebz they simply are not the best option for a lot of folks. YOU need to get to try a variety of guns so YOU can make YOUR OWN decision.

My name is *MALICE* and I approve of this statement.

Unless either of those handguns was under $100 ;)

Agree with all the previous statements, make sure you at least hold the different models you'd think of buying. Ideally you'd want to actually get out and shoot them, but holding them will do in a pinch. But as was pointed out a 16ish year old Sig with only two boxes through it. . . seems a little strange to me. Maybe it was a CPO (certified pre-owned) and has only had two boxes since then. You should also take into consideration how soon you want to get a pistol. As it seems that there are many back orders for the glocks, so unless you have a source for one then it could be quite a while (I didn't look through all the sponsors, just going off what I've heard lately). Either way, good luck and report back when you make a final choice.

As others have already stated you should try to at least hold the type of pistol you want before you buy it. Are there any stores in your area where you can fire both types of pistols. It will cost a few dollars but it is worth it. I bought a Glock 17 on a whim, nothing wrong with it functionally but I find it doesn't point very well naturally, at least for me. I have several Sigs, P226's and P229. I really like Sigs, but if I was going to purchase another one I would ensure it has the Short Reset Trigger (SRT). My 226 Combat does not have it but my 226 Enhanced Elite does and I find it makes quite a difference. I would also guess that a German made Sig with such a low round count has been reconditioned.

please at least try them first. the glock is like a mac/apple mouse; one button. hit it and win. The sig is like a PSP; many buttons. Hit them all in the right sequence and win. the glock is slightly more akward but you get used to it. Now other guns feel creepy if the arent square gripped etc.

Why not look at the CZ SP 01 shadow?

Try as many as you can.

I was in a similar position not too long ago, trying to decide what to get first. I rented a bunch of different handguns trying to find the one that fit me the best and that I was able to shoot well. After asking for advice and doing a bunch of reading, I tried the G17, G22, Sig P226 (9mm and .40) and M&P 9. I eventually decided that I was going to buy the P226, as it felt great in my hand and I was able to shoot better with it than the others.

And then I decided to try the CZ SP01 Shadow. It was awesome. I actually went back to the counter and rented the P226 again so that I could try both at the same time, and I was shocked at how much I liked the Shadow. I'm sure I will own a Sig and a Glock at some point, but I bought the Shadow. I haven't regretted that choice for a minute.

I sold a mint 226 (6 month old) pistol with 200rds fired for $850 shipped on the EE. Better deals are to be had for them. Make sure you try one first, as that's the only way you know. Can buy a new CZ75b for about $650.

Or you can do a search and about 20 "My first Pistol" threads will come up

You mean you didn't sell it for 150% of what you paid for it? ;) Glad to see some people who understand that no matter if a gun is LNIB that you still can't sell it for more than what you paid.

Thanks for all the replies!! The reason I was asking opinions on these is because I don't know of anywhere that one can try them out or handle them, there is nothing in my area unless I go to the range and wait for someone to show up, the 226 I was looking at is supposedly in new condition and looks that way in the pictures, I found out it was made in 1992 says "made in w.germany has a silver or stainless slide, (dont know if this is worth $800 or not??)I figured that I could adapt to just about any pistol being my first I would have nothing to compare it to.
