First handgun: S&W M&P .22 or SIG P226 .22????

Hi Folks,
I'm moving soon to a place where there is finally a indoor pistol range!! I want a .22 semi before going to a 9mm. I've narrow my choice between the Smith & Wesson Model M&P22 or the SIG P226 .22.
The reason is that my future 9mm will probably be on of this model.

Anyone shot the 2 and can give me their opinions?? Please, based on ACTUAL shooting. I've read everything on the net. Also, no, I don't want a Ruger, GSG or whatever. I need opinion on those 2 guns.

I haven't shot the SIG, but I'm sure you'll be happy with the MP22. It's quite a nice gun and shoots well. If you're determined to own the same platform in 9 mm, the M&P is a pretty cost effective way to go. SIG tends to be pricey.
 
Something to consider with the SIG 22 is that you can buy the 9mm or .40 cal slide kit later down the road and you'll have both to shoot with a quick slide and magazine swap.
 
I didn't like the M&P when I saw it in person. I didn't particularity like the 'sardine can' mags. I would go with a Sig IMHO. Its a fantastic firearm. Later on you can get an M&P .22 if your heart desires!
 
Oh something else I forgot to mention in the PM, M&P 22 mags are currently near impossible to come by. I don't know how easy the sig conversion mags are, but just thought I should put it out there.
 
You'll get all kinds of opinions here. Pick the gun you like better and want to eventually own in 9mm. Both are a compromise in 22lr, although the function and trigger are the same with the Sig as it's 9mm counterpart. And you can actually start with the Sig as a 22lr and buy the 9mm slide for less than buying the P226 as a 9mm then getting the 22lr slide later. The M&P 22 is a completely different gun mechanically inside than its 9mm counterpart. Decent gun, but I just didn't like it in either 9mm or 22lr.

I've shot both and chose a Glock 17 (with Advantage Arms 22lr kit). But of the two you asked, I liked the Sig better.
 
I have the Sig and love it, all my Sigs are made in USA and I have had no problems. Two things to keep in mind. The slide doesn't stay open on last round so you have to count or risk a dry fire. ( there was a company in the US that made mag followers to prevent this but they dissapeared ) I have only shot CCI Mini mags high velocity with only 2 FTF out of 2500 rounds. Alot of people have complained when using cheap ammo about issues. (go figure). Mags are easy to get and for a couple of hundred bucks you can get the conversion kit for 9/40/357 caliber. In the end buy what feels the best to you never mind the haters or fanboys.
 
I have the 226 in 9mm and the m&p22. To be honest if you like the feel of the sig you will like the m&p and vice versa. Shoot one good and you will shoot the other good. Even though you can get xchange kits for the sig I personally would rather have a "whole" gun. Anyways cant go wrong with either,both are on my never sell list. There is no doubt the sig is as better built gun but the m&p is a blast. Get both is the answer, and to those who say dont buy a USA made sig are wrong imo, they are beautiful and well built.
 
Can't help with the Sig part, have a M&P 9 and M&P 22 like both of them. The mags for the 22 are a pain to find, IRUNGUNS get them in from time to time.
 
Save up another couple weeks and get both. M&Ps are cheap.

The grip inserts that come with the M&P kits are nice. I shoot my friend's 9 regularly and only the last time bothered switching to the small insert for my itty bitty hands. Made all the difference in the world.
 
I've owned both. They both work. In my experience, the M&P22 functioned better with a wider variety of ammunition.

It really comes down to which centerfire pistol you want to shoot. In a perfect world, you would get both 22s and that would help you decide which 9mm to get.

If you aren't in a position to try both at this point then it's more difficult, and you'll have to decide based on what you "think you'll like". I decided against going with the Sig stream because it turned out that I personally just didn't care for double/single pistols. I prefer the consistency of a SAO or striker-fired pistol.

Notes: Going Sig gets you one pistol with two slides, while going M&P gets your two pistols for the same price. M&P22 frames do not have the interchangeable backstraps. Both magazines are hard to find, but I think M&P22 mags will probably be easier to get in the long run. Both will generally fit the same holsters as their 9mm brothers. The trigger on the M&P22 is very different from the trigger on the M&P9 (it's actually SAO), and the M&P22 can only be had with a thumb safety and mag disconnect safety installed (both can be removed).
