Hello, I am getting started in IPSC and am going to take the restricted course right away and then will need a handgun for the Black Badge course, I don't want it to be too expensive, and am willing to spend around $600-$700, I don't mind what caliber (unless one is reccomended over the other? I don't really know handgun calibers) and it will be a first handgun. I was thinking something along the lines of Ruger P89 or maybe a glock (since they are also a bit cheaper) ? Any IPSC shooters here that would reccomend one over the other?

Thanks.

Get the Glock over the Ruger. A Glock 17 would be an excellent pistol for IPSC Production Division but from what I understand, Production Division isn't recognized in Manitoba.....

Another great pistol for Production division is CZ. 75B is the basic model (read: most affordable, $629). New model SP-01 would be even better, but slightly more expensive.

See if you can shoot a CZ75 or a XD40 in .40cal. Those would be great starter guns. Imho avoid that Ruger P89 unless you've shot one and like the feel.

I was looking at the CZ's and they look nice, and they're very affordable also..... After I get the restricted, I will take a drive down to Wolverine Supplies and take a look and try different handguns and see which is most comfortable for me. Dragoon, I don't think Production Division is recognized in Manitoba, but I know that we have Standard class/division and Open class/division. Also wat caliber would be reccomended (especially for a beginner) ?

Thanks.

If you do not reload and looking for cheap shooting, I would chose the 9 mm. The fact that you will be shooting minor, will force you to put accuracy first. But the .40 is the caliber of choice in IPSC. If you want to reload, then go .40, It will be useless to equip yourself to reload for 9 mm and then have to buy again the .40 stuff as you progress.

I don't understand why IPSC Manitoba doesn't not only recognize Production Division but promote it. In a few short years, in Alberta at least, Production Division has grown to where it is often has the largest representation at qualifier matches. I think the sections that recognize Production have had similar experiences. If IPSC Manitoba wants to grow, promoting Production Division is the best way to achieve the desired results.

try to find a glock 17....the ruger my god feels like a cheese grader in your hands. not a fast easy gun to operate. it can be done, but the glock is far better.

Get CZ 75 SP-01, 9mm!!!!

This gun has a good balance, not too heavy, very smooth shooting.

In .22LR, get S&W 41

x2 on the CZ SP-01 - my dad just got one in September and it's a great gun. It easily competes with pistols almost twice it's price. Also have one of the nicest feeling grips out there.

Sounds like CZ's are the way to go, how about Grand Power? Are they any good or should stick to CZ or others? Also, I have heard that there is a power ratio that must be met, so would a heavier caliber such as .40 or .45 be a better choice? I also plan on buying a reloader in the near future since I shoot lots of .223 through my AR180B, so then I could get twice the use out of it. A couple questions, first can handguns be used at any approved firearms range, or does the range have to be specially approved for restricted firearms/handguns? As an example, if I had a restricted Black Rifle, would I be able to take it to St. Charles Rifle Range? Second, for Manitobans, what is the yearly membership fee for the Selkirk Game & Fish firing range? The Firing Line is a little expensive (for me anyways) for a yearly membership so I will just pay for each time I go, it will possibly be cheaper for me, but IPSC shoots during the summer at the Selkirk Game & Fish so I would also require a membership there, I heard that yearly membership there is around $48.00, is this true?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I am more experienced in the world of Rifles and Shotguns, and am a newbie to handguns :D

Thanks. ;)

Most ranges will accept handgun users. If there isn't a designated handgun area, then usually you can shoot at one end of a rifle range. I shoot in BC, so I'm not entirely sure of the rules in Manitoba, but I don't think you'll have much trouble.

From somebody who is also starting out in IPSC, I would suggest 9mm, as it is not only quicker to get accurate with if you don't have much experience with handguns, but also cheaper to shoot - especially if you're hand loading, which will let you experiment with different grain bullets and different power factors.

Good luck!

Any of the pistols you've listed should be good. If the grand power is the norinco one, I'd maybe shy away from it for IPSIC stuff. XD, CZ, GLOCK, in that order for me, but only since the glock and my hand don't get along.

Ok, thanks, I will be sure to take a look at those..... BTW Nine, I was wondering what's with the clown on your avatar, and then last night I watched The Devil's Rejects and while watching it I said to myself, 'Didn't I see that clown somewhere?' and then I realized! :D

Something everybody missed is that IPSC is not an introduction to handguns type of game. You really need to get comfortable before you do the Black Badge. It would also help you to decide what gun in what caliber. I wouldn't recommend going right from your restricted ticket to a Black Badge course. Big difference between "Standard" type guns and "Production" guns. You may even decide you prefer "Open"!
