Now, i don't know exactly whos right, but one would think (maybe an uneducated person) that flinching would cease if you started with a bigger gun because you would get used to it?

The big gun has the big bang. Anticipating the big bang will cause you to flinch. What you may get 'used to', is anticipating the big bang. The deal with a .22 is that it allows you to develop the kind of zen shooting mentality where you can pull the trigger without thinking of the wallop that may follow.
