First handguns, how long does it take to transfer?

Hi all,

I just recently acquired my restricted pal and was looking at getting a couple restricted's. My first choice as it would help complete my Soviet collection is a TT-33 because it is cheap and historically significant.
Basically what I am wondering is how long approximately (if everything goes well) does it take to get transferred to you? I currently don't have a range membership but once the restricted comes in I plan on acquiring one. Also in Nova Scotia do they allow the transferring of restricted firearms to the individual if they don't have a range membership? The other reason I ask is because a family member wishes to transfer to me a revolver they have had for years that has just sat around and collected dust. I don't want them to be waiting too long as they just want to give it to me and be done with it. I know there is really no option on how long I have to wait but I am just looking for a hopeful approximate based on others experiences.

You need a range membership before you buy or call in for the transfer of the handgun. They will ask you for your range membership when you call in or when they contact you. The transfer won't go though without one. In Alberta it only takes a few days to transfer. Usually buying from a dealer only takes a few days sometimes a bit longer for private deals.

You did not specify the type of handgun you were being given. If it has a barrel length of less than 105mm, it falls into the prohibited
category, and unless you are a direct descendant, and the gun was manufactured before 1946, they cannot transfer it to you.

Its a restricted firearm, a 6" barrelled revolver. I probably am going to try to transfer it anyways and see what they say.
 
One of the reasons most gun owners want to get rid of the CFO is because, in my opinion based on my observances, you are literally at the whim of the CFO on how long this will take. It could be hours, days or weeks.

You technically do not need a range membership to purchase a rstricted but it can often make things smoother.... Just one of those cases where the CFO applies personal policy in spite of it not actually being a law....
 
It seems lately that they will NOT complete the transfer unless you have a valid club membership, or collector status. Regardless of the actual law.
 
Sometimes your first restricted purchase takes a couple extra days. The whole range membership policy issue leaves you with three options. Get one and get your gun soon. Apply for collector status and open yourself up to possible inspection of your "collection". They can't show up unannounced, but a pain nonetheless. Or fight it. I've heard of a couple of cases where gun owners have told the CFO to submit to them in writing why they were being refused transfer and quote the law they are basing it on, and apparently they got they're transfer.

Well the last one will probably be the best option for the moment if it comes to that (at this exact moment it is not very convenient to get a club membership for various reasons). Thanks for the advice.
 
That is exactly what I did for my first transfer. I asked for it in writing and I asked for a copy of the law that states I cannot purchase a restricted firearm without range membership. I was asked why I would need a restrited without range membership and I replied "Who would join a golf club before they even own clubs?".... I got my transfer....
