First Hangun recommendation?

To keep it brief, I'd like to get my first (and hopefully not last) handgun this summer before this *possible* banning fiasco. My limit is $900. Preferably something low caliber like 9mm or 45. Something that wont tear a hole thru metal targets

I was looking at either a glock 17, or a 1911 to keep it simple.. but if you have any other recommendations I am all ears.

Go to your local gun store and ask to hold the pistols. Get something that feels right in your hands. Be a shame to take someone's advice online only to find it doesn't work for you.

My first handgun was a CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow. Love that thing.
 
^ that's good advice. nothing beats a good fit in the hand. to be honest your budget is enough for a decent range, with a lot of polymers that will last you forever. on that note, would say go with something that has modding options if it becomes your only gun. glocks, CZs, 1911s, berettas, etc

Great choice or a Glock 17 for even more options accessories etc
 
Your question is really too broad to get any meaningful advice. What to you want to do with it? Just plinking at targets?...... Bullseye shooting?..... Steel Challange?...... IPSC type shooting games? Your question about a Glock vs a 1911 is a little like a new car buyer saying "I have $###x to spend. Should I buy a pickup truck or a two seat roadster?" ;)

I second the advice about handling as many of the options as you can. What fits and 'feels right" to one shooter may not work at all for another.

OK, you're giving Toronto as your location. Where are you going to be shooting? What sort of shooting are you going to be doing?
Or are you just wanting to get a handgun for the sake of getting a handgun?
I would suggest that you make contact and visit the club where you are going to be shooting and talk to the folks there. It is entirely possible that you will be invited to try different pistols. I would suggest that you try, or at least handle, as many pistols as possible before purchasing. Avoid investing in something that just doesn't suit you.
G17s and 1911s are very different pistols, different controls, weight, handling characteristics. You might even consider optic versus iron sights. Good to try both.

I second the 2.0 range kit option. It comes with 3 mags, holsters for mag and pistol as well as a mag loader. The content for the price really can't be beat?

Plus you can choose between 9mm and .40
 
First pistol for me was sd9ve thing was garbage sold it and went for the shadow 2. Spend the money and something you will enjoy to shoot. I prefer metal over plastic.
 
My first was a remington Rp9. For the price it got me shooting. I just got a Glock 19x and there is really no comparison. The entry level pistols are serviceable but when you get to shoot a more expensive pistol you really see why it's money well spent. Lots of good suggestions for an M&p and shadow 1 but they are two completely different guns. If you want a striker get an M&p and spend the rest on ammo. If you want a steel hammer fired get a shadow. Either way I don't think you can go wrong.
 
My first was an M&P Core 9mm, but I spent extra for the red dot, and trigger/spring kit, then spent time polishing the trigger bar and striker block... BUT I enjoy my $280 Norinco 1911 9mm that I spent hrs watching youtube vids on how to tune it.

So for me...
1911 = best trigger imho
M&P = fits me better & optic is better for my old eyes, lol
 
Thanks for the advice! I've been able to get a hold of a friend's sig sauer 1911, it was pretty fun at a range. I've also got to hold, but not fire, a glock 17. I'll do some more searching around to see what feels right!

Haha fair enough! The hangun will just be for shooting targets at a range, nothing more. IF I get better in the future, I'd consider competitions and challenges.. But in the meantime, this is just a handgun that I'll be bringing to the range when I can, to fire off a few rounds for fun.

I guess it comes down to the notion that I need to get what "feels right" in my hands.
