Since. the OP didn't bother to identify it (BAD OP! Go to your room! :p) a bit of digging was necessary to discover that it was designed by Joseph Enouy. Here's a link to an article on the monster.

Where's the holster?

"In the next carriage. I'll send Richardson to fetch it."

Seems to me that a fellow would have bought that more to entertain and impress his visitors with, than as a practical attempt at shooting iron.

No TV or Radio. Having a variety of 'curiosities' to show off was part of being an interesting host.

That, or somebody just wanted to show it could be done. At the time it was made, a 48 shot revolver would have been a jaw-dropping revelation even if it wasn't practical.

Yeah, some of the coolest stuff that makes it in to collections, is the stuff that is least practical and hardly successful from a sales perspective.

Guys had a LOT of ideas about what constituted a better mousetrap, and the Patent Office required a physical model for a very long time, when you went to file for Patent protection.

Practicality was not always first and foremost in the minds of those with a pet project, though i was probably much more so to the potential customers.
