Google "advice" vs "advise", and it is ruger, not rugger.

Joking aside, Does sound like a fun trip, and nice rifles.

In addition to the permits in South Africa, you are required to get a temporary export permit from EXCOL in Canada.

Most airlines will let you fly with 5kg of ammunition but it must be locked in a separate case from guns.

Make sure your guns are checked all the way from Canada to Jo'berg (called in transit) and flying through Frankfurt or London or even the U.S. is no issue.

Fly who is ever the cheapest but the Star Alliance group is typically the easiest way to get there without touching your guns

You may want to check out a service ion Jo'berg called Air2000. They making getting in and out of South Africa a breeze with guns.

Thanks sheep hunter ill look into that stuff, I just did my first over seas hunt in the UK for roe deer, sadly I didn't get any. I borrowed from a friend but this time I want to bring my own.

Fly via Frankfurt to avoid hassles. You might also want to talk to someone like Gracy Travel. They're well regarded and have a service to handle SAPS permits and offer meet and greet at JNB. Or if you book your own travel I recommend getting a meet and greet service lime Afton Guest House has. Plus Afton is supposed to be quite nice.

As a Canadian, going through London is a breeze too...providing your rifles remain in transit. On our trip in May we went through London on way there and Frankfurt on way back....no issues either way. It's different if you are flying with an American airline...then London isn't so simple from what I understand.

South African law doesn't allow foreigners or anybody who isn't a registered owner of a .303 or a .375 for example, to buy said ammo.
And to get hunting trophies exported I believe a licenced PH will have to do some paperwork.

Things I've run out of lent or borrowed, money ,memory cards ,suntan lotion , rifle sling, ammo ,hat.
Let your credit card companys know you will be in Africa.

Have fun

Gloves and a windbreaker because it's COLD in the back of a Land Cruiser.
I also like to take some tape (for the muzzle) an extra scope ,a bore snake and a screwdriver set.

Like Sheephunter said fly Star Alliance, have your rifles sent all the way through to JoBurg. SA permits are not that hard to get, for first timer use Afton Guest house or similar make it easier to get through the airport. rifles can not be in the same calibre, buy borrow or steal a very good case, airline gorillas will try to break your rifle.

BUM Germany is requesting now a transit permit unless you have an European firearms passport ....

long time ago SAA/SAL was taking directly the firearms in the safe that they had in the cockpit of their 747s ....

not even an hassle from Joburg ...

...

My understanding is that the permit does not apply to firearms "in-transit"...only if you take possession of your firearm in Frankfurt....even if just to change airlines.

you may be right but if for any reasons you didnt make the connection and you need to take possession of your firearms ... on an international travel i prefer to be ready than cry ...
Germans are easy to deal with the right paper .. wont say the same about london and British Airways but everybody may have a different story.
