First hunting experience

If you are thinking about a rifle to take everything from coyotes to bull elk there are dozens of cartridges that will do the job. Pick one in a common cartridge so ammo won't be too pricey. As for military rifles they do have history and a special appeal. However, for hunting I would go with a modern bolt action as it would be far more accurate. For a simple Arsenal to take care of all your hunting needs at a reasonable price I would go for the following

1) an 870 express shotgun in 12 ga with a 28" barrel.
2) a weathery vanguard in 7 08. Or even good old 308
3) a 10/22 for plinking fun and small game.

You should be able to get all of that for $1200 or less if you look for deals

Just my 2 cents

Agree 100%. I myself have a Remington 870 with three barrels and screw in Remchokes ( 28in. vented, 23in. cantilevered rifled and 20in. Rifle-sighted), Vanguard S2 in .308, Ruger 10/22 and a Marlin 336 with peep sights as a bush gun. Pretty confident I have all the bases coevered. Oh, and an SKS as a plinker just to piss off the RCMP/Libetards.

So after more research (hurray for more things I can low cash on) I have settled on the 870.

I came into some money from relatives (hurray for grandmothers XD) and I am accelerating my licensing/gun buying plans. I will be hopefully booking my PAL course for this weekend, then taking hunter safety shortly after. I looked at used 795 marlins and 10/22's on used firearms. I see more 10/22s than marlins at very decent prices, usually with some extras. So I am basically looking at a NEW 795 or a used 10/22. I get the 795 is a bit more accurate out of the box versus a stock 10/22, but I know the 10/22 has a massive after market.

So should I bite the bullet and get a new 795, or get a used 10/22 for about the same price. I like the idea of 10/22 rotary magazines versus single stack 795 mags which are more touchy from what I have been reading.

Don't blow the budget on the firearm without considering all the other goodies - safe / ammo / cleaning supplies / perhaps a cheap vise / sling / scope - did I miss anything?

Cleaning supplies I have covered. Ammo I factor into the budget of the guns, just like the sling. Safe wise I am hunting for a decent deal, but will most likely store locked in locked gun cases in a locked closet, inside my locked room.

The scope I would only need for the .22 and or rifle I get. I ave tried a couple of budget pieces of glass and I absolutely adore the Pursuit X1, which is only 100$ at bass pro.
