First hunting rifle advice

So I am finally ready to buy something that is not a plinker or milsurp. I have been doing a lot of research and have come to the conclusion that a 30.06 is the rifle for me. Partially due to the different grain sizes you can get for them. They just seem like I could hunt deer with a 150Gr or moose with the 220Gr. I am very new at the sport of shooting so any help or advice on this would be huge. I should say I am not looking to spend more than $400 and would really like to find something used and preferably older. Thanks

You have a good notion and have almost made up your mind on caliber.
Call Tradex (site sponsor) and talk to the elderly gentleman there.(Tony)
Tell him what you are all about and let him know your budget. He will give you
the honest goods as to what to buy in a 30-06 from their site if that's what you wish. The Savage 111 is a decent rifle but with the scope packag it came with was a great disappointment. The scope crapped out at the range dialing it in. Maybe a WTB in the EE may be another option. If you aren't in a hurry, time may play out for you. I've said it before and I will say it again, I prefer high end used than low end new.
Glad you have made up your mind to join the sport.
Have fun with it.:)

A friend of mine also bought the savage package in .270 as his first rifle a couple weeks ago.

We took it to the range the other week and put about a box through it.
Great shooting rifle, the decelerator pad works well and is a very comfortable rifle to shoot. I would reccomend it to other hunters who are looking for something in this price range, but as stated above, the scope is good enough quality to put on a .22 for shooting ground squirrels. And that is what my friend will do with is in the future as well. He is currently looking at a used bushnell and vortex scopes.

Good luck and enjoy your new rifle which ever way you go!
