First hunting rifle

Have a gander at the couple of 6.5x55's at Trade X. One is a Churchill and a Sabatti?
Five hundred each. Pretty good deals for a couple nice rifles. Still leaves you some decent coin
for a mid + range scope.

$400.00 for rifle of your choice, $400.00 for optics, $200.00 rings ,bases, sling, box or two of shells maybe a case.

Like others have said, pick the rifle that feels best for you, then a scope that you can pick up an image easy on that rifle.Brand and chambering come after comfort and feel.

Buy one of these in either 30/06 or 7/08 and you'd be set. Good deal.

New rifles: Stevens 200, Marlin XS7, Savage 11, (Savage packages with scopes), Remington 700 SPS, Tikka T3, Weatherby Vanguard. Go to a gun shop that has them or find a friend who has an example and at least hold them, shoulder them, work the bolt. See what feels comfortable because if the stock doesn't fit you well you won't shoot that particular rifle as well as it can shoot.

New scopes, (best for versatility would be a 3-9x40), Redfield Revolution, Bushnell 3200 Elite, Weaver Classic V series, Weaver K4 or K6 (fixed power, 4x or 6x), Vortex.

From the above lists you will be able to put together a good setup for under $1k and it could last you lifetime of hunting. (But being human, you will probably sooner or later want to try something else, for a change, which is part of the fun, but you don't need to think about that now.)

Savage Scout m10 in 308 win. with accustock, good trigger and Savage is known for accuracy. Buy slightly used and save a few hundred dollars. I believe a good mid-range priced used rifle is a better investment than a new entry level rifle especially if it comes with a scope. That being mentioned I have one that I'm selling.

That's a good idea, just not always a realistic expectation if you only shop the EE on this site. There are some neglected treasures in the secondhand racks of small gunshops all over.

Not sure where you live but if its in SW Ontario area I'd be glad to let you try out my stevens 200 with the Boyds stock I just received. (the whole package with nikon monarch scope came in under $800) It is a beautiful rifle and easily shoots under 1 MOA with the load I've developed.

I was thinking $600-$800 for the rifle + scope, no more than $1000.

Check LeBaron.
Tikka T3 Lite in .308 $599.00
Bushnell Elite 3200 2x7 for $211.00 or 3x9 for $215.00 (you also get free Butler Creek flip up caps)
Get yourself (x2) Weaver Base #61 $4.00 each (Cabelas)
Weaver Rings $23.00 (Cabelas)
Your all set and wont regret it. Good Luck

Savage model 10 or model 11 would be a good choice and not at all expensive, but I've also been reading some good things about the TC Venture I think it's between $500 - $600, the Savage I have experience with and both of mine are great guns and deadly accurate especially the 116 but I'm not speaking from experience with the TC, just what I've read.

As for scopes I find my Nikon Buckmaster a good one and not to expensive and I also have the Bushnell trophy XLT on my model 11 it's also a pretty good scope and was $239. Hope this helps

Y'know, it was bound to happen....some gomer suggesting a Poly M14. I'd suggest, but only if you like a good semi, with open sights.

Otherwise, a Savage , Marlin x7 or Weatherby Vanguard.

I purchased my vanguard with open sights for $500. I now have a Weaver K4 on it. It is the perfect bush/truck rifle.

I also purchased a used Savage 111 in 30-06. I also put a Weaver K4 on it too. It was $100 cheaper than a new Marlin x7. The only thing about my Savage (and Marlin) is that they are top-load only. No releasing floorplate on those. Real nice shooters though.

I was going to recommend a rifle, but seeing as every rifle made has already been mentioned .....

I think maybe the OP is more confuse now than before...:D

You're right lol

Thanks all for the input. I think the best thing for me would be to go see my local gun dealer and get a feel for some of the rifles there (as someone mentioned). He's a pretty good guy and I was buddies with his son in school, so here's to hoping he helps me choose a nice setup.

X2. I own a Marlin in 7mm-08 and it offers the best features/accuracy of any other rifle at twice the price. Whatever you do, do not buy the Savage Edge/Axis - they shoot well enough, but they are a cut below 'low end'. IMO.

Buy one of these in either 30/06 or 7/08 and you'd be set. Good deal.

As mentioned before, you have to get your hands on the equipment and try using it or just playing with it. For example, some like the palm swells found on some of the new brownings. I personally can't stand it!

So try before you buy.
