So i am looking for a budget hunting rifle. I was thinking either a Savage Axis XP or Hunter XP. Anybody got any opinion on these? And what caliber? I was thinking .243 or .308, and plan to use it deer hunting next year. I would like to be able to occasionally shoot steel with it without becoming too sore, as i am only 150lbs. Is a .243 enough power to take a deer cleanly?
Thanks!

And how much do you think you need to weigh to shoot a 308? Back in the early '80 when ladies were first allowed to join up for combat arms, most weighed 105 lbs soaking wet shooting both the FNC1 and FNC2.

My 10 year old nephew rapid fires the hell out my brother m305
So id hope to hell you could handle a bolt action.
I have a savage 111 its been great i swapped out the trigger for a rifle basix and it shoots just as good as my tikka just dosnt look as ###y.

What's the terrain like where you hunt? I got a scoped T3 for deer this season but I found myself in thick bush more than open fields. Wife got me Marlin 336BL this Christmas for that reason. Love my T3, just not the best choice when it comes to hunting in the thick stuff. When I got my first rifle ever recoil was something I studied a lot about and made that part of my decision. What a waste of time that was. You won't know until you shoot it. First gun turned out to be a Rem 700 in 30-06. Recoil wasn't an issue as I was having too much fun lol. I dont think recoil will bother you as much as you think it will unless its a 300 win mag in a really light gun. That might make you flinch a bit, not a good way to start off.

TFox the .308Winchster will be a very reliable round, and a more economical choice normally if you don't reload because there's so much bulk ammo and budget hunting ammo available for it today. I can't comment on the AXIS, but don't neglect looking at a gently used sporter from yesteryear in .308Win on the EE for the same or approximate money. You may be more satisfied in the long run.

Don't waste your time with a .243, its a toy for kids, not a hunting rifle. Rifles such as 30.06 and .308 are the benchmark for Average recoil. Its better to get a real rifle and shoot a lighter load, than to have a wimp rifle that won't load any higher. I still shoot my Mod 70 in 30.06 that i had since a boy of 120 pounds. I used 150 gr back then, and when I was an adult at 150 pounds, I switched to 180gr and still use it now.

Lmao sounds like he's trying to compensate for something either that or very uneducated.
