Figured I'ld try something a little different this year!

No, not in a pistol, in an 1894 Marlin with Williams receiver sight. 180 gr Hornandy XTP over 13 gr of W 296 with WSR small rifle primer to light it up.....

One shot on Whitetail Doe at 100m. Bullet struck high and hit directly in spine three vertibrae back from shoulder. Full penetration and spinal separation with a hole big enough for two fingers side by each upon exit. I've shot 'em same as this (in spine) with a 303 British in years past with 180's and didn't get full penetration!!! Very impressive ballistics for a pistol cart. Now, I just have to stop hitting so frickin' high on them....

Looks like I have a nice little minimal recoiling close range deer rifle for the girls (two daughters)to start with... :p
Note: Doe weighted 95 lbs on the butcher's hook without head, gut or hide on her...

Right on Darrell,Your daughters have something to look forward to
If you need a chrony, you can come down and use mine :?:
Not this week-end though,my bro "Gilly" will be up.
I have to re-chrony my 45/70,.50cal in-line and my new .300 Savage :)

gunasauras,

I was looking to purchase a Marlin in the next few months and was told you can't get much further than 100m with these rifles.

Have you tried it at the range with targets further than 100m?

Ballistically, I would put the 357 mag cart at 100M to 125M as it's maximum effective range on deer sized game under ideal conditions. You could shoot targets at longer distance, but I would be very hesitant to depend upon it for clean humane kills past 125M. I have not personally tried it past 150M with the Williams peep, but at that distance, it was still printing 8" or under groups off hand.....As for the Marlin, any rifle in this calibre would be the same IMHO, but with a different cart in the Marlin (I also own an 1895 Marlin in 45-70)you will have different ballistics of course. Now that rifle I will shoot to 200M and farther confidently.....due to the calibre of course....I also handload it, not factory ammo....
