Looking to get some ideas on what calibre rifle I should get. I could easily use google but I'd rather hear it from some fellow Canadian Gunnutz. I have a 22-250 that is deadly out to 400-500 yards but I want to invest in a bigger calibre rifle now. Looking for a caliber flat shooting, that is good to 1000 yards, has the stopping power to go with it and is easy to find ammo. Biggest thing I'd hunt with it would be moose and deer and it would see some use at the range every so often. I have shot a 270wsm, very flat shooting and I've heard 7mm also fits this?

Thanks in advance.

300Win Mag. Huge bullet selection Do you re-load?
Bullet weights from 110gr right up to 220gr
Load some 185grVLD bullets for 1000yrds
Recoil is not too bad

1000 yards? Get out your calculator, you'l need it.
308 for non magnum and as the others have said 7mm Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag for the magnums.

270wsm. Very flat shooting and great bullet selection. Though an of the .30
Cal like 308,3006,300wsm,300wm will all do what you need.

Accuracy at 1000y is a big commitment, and not achievable with "easy to find ammo". Add stopping power to that...you need high BC bullets at high velocity. 7Rem, 300win or 7wsm, 300wsm will do this. 338 Lapua is an easy answer to your question. But still no easy to find ammo. And I disagree, no 270 need apply. Unless it's a custom twist running Matrix bullets.

7mm-300 a 7mm boolit in a 300wm case. This I think will get you what you are looking for, or 6.5 SAUM 4S, but those are just the ramblers of a dreamer that wishes to have my very own of each one day lol. But I would ask how far a 6.5 creedmoor would be good to, might be a little less recoil but I imagine you will be putting a break on it anyways.

300 win mag would be the smallest that I'd go. 300 rum, 338 lapua etc. Your are going to want to hand load and experiment if you plan to consistently hit targets/game that far. My rig is a 300 win mag and im currently using 210 berger vlds at 2900fps. I have some of the new 215s that have a bit higher bc that im going to try. My big plan is to shoot out the barrel(lots of practice) and eventually re-barrel to a 338 edge or lapua and use the 300gr bergers. I stretched the limit on a moose this fall at 975m. shot placement was perfect energy was 1200ft-lbs velocity was 1600fps, moose are big animals I don't know if I would try that again with this setup let alone push it any further.

If you're going to shoot long; may as well hit them as hard as you can. I like the .338 Edge, but the RUM or Lapua are in that bracket.

There is nothing easy or cheap about long range hunting.

OP you need to be very careful about what you are asking for here. Going from 22-250 to a large caliber magnum will be a big eye opener with respect to recoil. The big cannons being discussed here are typically not much fun to shoot because they will beat the cr@p out of you. The only way to learn long range shooting is to do it and do it a lot. Having the sh!t beat out of you every time you shoot is not conducive to practicing a lot.

I suggest you reconsider what you want out of this rifle and look at something 6mm or 6.5mm in order to get started at long range. Then once you are more experienced and comfortable consider moving up to something with more punch.

I only say easy to find ammunition because my buddy has a rough time getting ammunition for his .270 and I have an even harder time finding quality 22-250 ammo. I'm not saying i'm taking 1000 yard shots every day I just like the ability to be able to try it. That being all said I think I'm going to go with 7mm as I keep hearing good things about it.

1000yds accurately and stopping power for large animals you say. What kind of field conditions, rain, snow, wind, etc?

To make your part easier a large caliber that is less effected by wind and adverse weather conditions will help you a lot with consistency. Factory ammo for 338 Lapua is readily available and would be the smallest caliber I would go.
