Ok so I'm still new to shooting in general got the poor Canadian combo so far and that it. Now for my next venture into sport shooting I want to be long range. Mostly will be out to 300m but some out to 800m if I can a 1km would be sweet eventually. So I was looking at the Rugar Precision Rifle mostly so far but Cabellas has the hometown heroes event soon and the Savage 10FCP on sale too. Now question is mostly do I buy once and cry once with the RPR or do I go savage and add to it as necessary. It will be just target punching and I will still need an optic and all the fixings. Will be shooting factory ammo to build up a brass supply until I can get into reloading (maybe). How much will I have to add to the Savage to bring it up to RPR level quality or are they similar enough? Thanks.

My opinion only
308 has less expensive and more available factory loads than 6.5 creedmore
Ruger precision rifle comes in 20” barrel lenght for 308
308 through a 20” barrel will suffer in velocity if you wish to reach out there

Savage 10TR is 650$ at SFRC
24” 308 barrel with 5R rifling and 1:10 twist, also threaded muzzle for future brake use

Initial scope budget + money saved from choosing savage, can maybe get you something in the 2000$ budget for optics?

Ya I forgot to mention this is going to be a .308 either way. Simply cannot afford 6.5 creedmoor. I was thinking more RPR first but now savage just so I can afford an optic sooner but if I am having to get a chassis or something for the savage anyways I may as well just get the RPR. Whats the big difference between the 10TR and the 10 FCP-SR? I am guessing same action at least? I did consider a 700 but thought there is better out there to do the job easier in my price range.

In my understanding
FCPSR top bolt release
10TR bottom bolt release
FCPSR and 10TR exact same barrel diameter
FCPSR has a fluted barrel though, by fluting a same dia barrel you lose ridgidity

They say FCPSR comes with a 10 round mag and 10TR a 4 round mag, but my 10TR cane with a 10 rounder

I thought fluting would not decrease rigidity but just decreased weight and increased head dispersion. That was a pretty good overview of the two differences. Thanks. I know all rifles will out shoot me for sure. So go savage 10-something is sounding like the best idea? I am just unsure of their quality I hear being all over the place and it would take me awhile being new and basically on my own to figure out if I got a lemon or not. That's my biggest worry.

Get the savage 10 fcpsr. I love mine. I have the older version with the digicam stock. Reliable has a used one with a vortex viper on top for a decent price. I like when people have concerns about savage quality yet they are comparing to a rugger rpr like its something special.

I probably got fluting concept wrong, i was told by a fellow range member
When in same dia, unfluted will be more ridgid
When the fluted barrel is of bigger dia than unfluted, but both end up the same weight, fluted will be more ridgid

I would buy the Savage and a decent scope first to see how I liked that discipline of shooting.
Then I would decide if I want to use and enjoy the Savage or sell it to buy a Ruger.

I have just heard bad stories about savage here and there and nothing all that bad about the rugar. Part of it may just be looks and the rugar looks more like some crazy expensive high preformance space age sniper and the savage is more traditional in appearance. Those could be the reasons why people are saying things like that. I would prefure to go through P&D and support some local business but price is still a factor and availability but they have always been awesome to work with.

Put a chassis on the savage and make it look however you want. I would take a savage over a ruger any day. I enjoy all brands and have never been let down by any of my savages.

This setup cost about 200$ less than a ruger precision rifle.
That is including ATRS 20 moa Steel rail and insite arms brake.

Thats what I am trying to avoid. Is having to add a chassis right away. Would rather get it set up more or less out of the box I suppose minus some of the little things like rails and muzzle brakes can be added or changed later
