So I want to add my first military surplus rifle to my gun collection which as of now only consists of guns I use for hunting, so I dont know much about surplus firearms and I'm not sure what gun to get started with, I'm thinking of getting a Lee Enfield 303. What do you guys think?

JP at P&S has some VERY nice examples of most milsurp examples. How much are you willing to spend? Do you plan on hunting with it? A LB LE is a great rifle and it is Canadian.

I dont have alot of money to spend, so somewhere between $200 and $300would be my max budget, and hunting isnt my main concern I just want something to go to the range with but it would be nice knowing I could use it for a backup when hunting, and what do you mean by "JP at P&S" and "LB LE"?

Thanks

P&S Militaria (JP is the owner) has some Lee Enfields, also the "Russian Captured" (RC) Mauser K98k's. (among many others)

I'm not much of an Enfield fan, but I hear some people like them ;)

I like my Mosin Nagant m91/30 I bought from S.I.R mail order for $119.00 back in December. The only downfall is ammo is kinda getting scarce, I live in P.E.I and only 1 gun shop here so it doesn't help. Mine is in excellent condition and I installed a scout mount ($15.00 from tradeex) and a scout scope ($60 from the EE). In total I have like $200.00 into the gun and can hit 12 inch steel plates at 400+ yards with ease, I never tried any further. With irons the same can be done at 200. the mount did take a bit of shimming to hold tight though but holds zero flawlessly now. Can't really beat the price for a high powered rifle that will do the same as a gun that cost like 3 times the price. Just some advice, buy what suits you best.

The Russian Capture (RC) Mausers are great and so are the Mosins. LB LE means LongBranch LeeEnfield. If you want a Canadian LeeEnfield, that is the way to go. The M1 is very cool too, but not cheap.

OF course, I am biased (got a Lee Enfield for sale in the EE section right now :D)

Lee Enfields are, indeed, great. The Mosin-Nagant suggestion is very good. I'd add, the SKS for sale (both at SIR and at Frontier) are likely a rare opportunity to get that rifle for that cheap.

Good point, I ordered mine in January from Frontier ($241.00 to my door)and I already bought 560 rounds, and ammo is fairly easy to find.

There are alot to pick from. My choices are as follows:
Swedish Mauser 6.5x55...by far my favorite milsurp to shoot !
Russian M44 7.62x54r
Lee Enfield 303
Sks 7.62x39

I warn you, Riffer. Once you buy one you won't be able to stop!

It is a compulsive, all consuming passion that will eat away at your soul until you have satiated your hunger.

You will find yourself constantly scanning the; buy & sells, garage sales, back rooms of gun stores, etc. You will be always hoping to find that undiscovered gem that was stored in grease and never shot; waiting to be cleaned up and to glisten again like the day it was first assembled.

Your ears will be specially attuned to hearing whispered rumours discussing shipments that are being brought in from countries selling off their nations obsolete stockpiles of weapons and ammunition.

You will daydream about what you would have done if you had the money to buy your favourite milsurps back when they were plentiful and inexpensive.

You may even try searching for the doorway in Quantum Physics that would enable you to travel back in time to secure your hoard of treasure.

If you are unprepared to face this challenge I bid you to to walk away now while you still can.

Otherwise, welcome to the club!:)

Thanks guys, this question will probably make me look like a total tool but whats SIR and Frontier?

Questions like this are for fellas who are in the need to know.
EVERYBODY on this or any other forum had to start at sometime with little or no knowledge of milsurps or where to look.
Knowledge is a powerful tool
Keep asking...;)

Congratulations on deciding to get into collecting old milsurps. It's an enjoyable pastime for any shooter and there's an outstanding community of people around the Internet who are more than willing to help new collectors. In my opinion, the Lee Enfield genre is an excellent place to start.

Now you're going to need a lot of research and reference material, so here's a good start ... ;)

With thanks to dimitri, here's a FREE excellent scanned publication that everyone should have stored on their computer, which provides complete instructions on assembly and disassembly of almost every milsurp made.

How to load, operate, disassemble, assemble American, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and other military small arms. 218 pages with photographs and line drawings.

Thanks alot guys, I got a question about ammo, as you can tell I've only used guns for hunting and just bought primium ammo, but can you buy surplus ammo for the LE 303? Also where, quantity and price?

One of my first guns was a chopped .303 no4 mk1 bought it for 50$ off a guy with original case extra mag cleaning kit . I still have it and enjoy taking it out now and then . If you are lucky enough than you can find a similar deal . Good luck .

The days of cheap surplus ammo for just about anything are gone.
POF (Pakistani .303 ) may seem like a bargain until you try to fire it,click-bang or just click)
Greek HXP is the best stuff, and reloadable If you can Find Canadian ammo (boxer primed) it's also good.
Sellier &Bellot is also boxer primed FMJ
The way to go is reloading. I would suggest Remington brass rather than Winchester.
Digressing to Russian, what you usually find is berdan primed. (fire and dump)
Swedish 6.5 is not a problem as it is commercialy available and other than milsurp, reloadable.
You do not need high priced hunting bullets to punch paper.
