I'm looking at buying my first milsurp rifle and the SKS looks like a good deal. The only place I have found that have some in stock is S.I.R. They seem to be selling the chinese sks. If I understand correctly, the chinese sks' have a chrome lined barrel? I was thinking of buying a case of 7.63x39 ammo from CanadaAmmo. Is the Czeck Lellier and Bellot M43 they sell the corrosive ammo I've read about? If so, what precautions do I need to take? Does the rifle have to be cleaned after every shooting?

I think Frontier Taxidermy (check their website has the chinese SKS still). Don't worry about the corrosive ammo. Blast the s**t out of it and give it a regular cleaning/wipe down after your done. I think some people rinse a little water or windex down the tube after and then the usual hoppes or whatever after. Don't forget the gas system too. I've put an 1120 case of czech down the pipe of mine with the basic cleaning after and it looks like the day I brought it home.:)

first, check with canadaammo.com to see if they have stock.

if not, then check the ammo forum started by maplesugar , he found a gun store in vernon, BC with 30 cases, $179 each and the store will ship.

thats a good price cos store in vancouver sells the same czech ammo for $225 and an hour east of here, in chilliwack gun store sells them for $250.

to answer your other questions, yes, norinco barrels are chrome lined but still requires thorough cleaning after using the czech ammos which are corrosive .
 
Calum, hit the burnaby HACS gunshow (monthly), the old pelicans' there got piles of that crap ammo laying around and less than $250 a case! :bsFlag: Jesus, I paid $185/case in November and thought I got gang-raped. Supply and demand I guess.
 
Marstar has 7.62X39

I bought a case from them last month. My Norinco sks loves eating that ammo. Ellwood Epps has Norinco SKS rifles for $179 and a few are still in stock

I live in Montreal... Canada's capital for no ammo and no rifle selection. There is a hunting and fishing show going on so I might have a look there.

I got an email from CanAmmo and they are out of 7.62x39.

It seems ammo is hard to find in any caliber these days.

308 = rare
223 = rarer
7.62 = rarest

What is the use of buying an SKS or an M14 if you can't get any ammo for it?
 
You can get ammo for the M14 at any gunstore... 308 Winchester is not hard to find. Wolverine has the Czech surplus 7.62x39mm ammo for 145 bucks per 1120 round crate.

True, but I'm looking for inexpensive surplus ammo so 308 ammo at 1$ the cartridge isn't in my price range. I also found that wolverine does have Czeck 7.62x39 but the shipping is very expensive. It sucks living in the second biggest city in Canada but all the stores are out west. I'll either have to wait for an new arrival of stock into Canada. I'm also looking for an nice SKS and they are also rare. I know SIR has some but they are a little more expensive then Marstar. All this would be simple if I had a larger war chest :p

If you can get a case of 7.62 russian for $200. then buy it as it looks like prices aren't gonna drop for awhile.
As for the 7.62 Nato, email George Bush and tell him to quit wasting all our good plinking/zombie killer ammo chasing ghosts around in the desert.:slap:

In Montreal, you either have LeBaron (average ammo selection, poor rifle selection), SAIL (average rifle selection, poor ammo selection) and then you have Walmart or Canadian Tire so choice is limited. Rumour has it that a Cabella's is opening a store in Montreal so that might bring more selection. I have trouble finding decent ammo for my .22. I guess I'm just a little late on the SKS band wagon.

Not something you can get at Walmart, but it is available.
No diffrent then most ammo these days.

I am pretty sure you will not find ammo there, but there is an Arms and Militaria fair March 4th in Longueuil, Que. I was there at the last one and people were selling boxes of 20 shells on stripper clips for around $4, did not see any cases for sale, but who knows, maybe at this next one someone will be selling a case, plus you do not pay any taxes at the arms fair. If you need an address or any more info on it message me.

Cabela's opening in Mirabel Que, about 45 min from Montreal, supposed to be in 2008, though I believe no construction has been started. The whole project apparently takes up 14 million sq. ft. Big place. There is also is a small hunting/rifles store in Kanawake mohawk reserve, she usually buys a few cases of SKS ammo and you pay no taz there, but I do not think she has any now.
