First moose hunt any advice?

7.62x39 is not adequate cartridge for a moose. It is not the caliber I have issues with but the amount of powder behind the bullet. It should have a bit more power behind it. 308 would be a good start in my opinion.

Also, as others said…avoid swamps, water and other difficult terrain or you gonna have tough time.

Don’t waste money on scent killers, most of your scent will come in a way of breathing. Be however mindful of wind direction. Same for clothing, wear what is comfy, warm and dry especially boots.

Be prepared to harvest the animal and I mean BE prepared. It is not a small task dealing with shot moose. Atvs, vehicles of all kind will be of great help.

I’d choose days that are cooler and walk around your hunting area well before the season to figure out the moose movement.

Oh! And when field dressing/gutting etc. watch out for other predators.

Have fun and good luck 🙂
It’s good to 100 m with a federal fusion. Plenty of moose downed with a 30-30 with same ballistics. Wouldn’t be my choice but under 100m it’s very doable with that specific federal fusion round.

I’m sure it is doable under extremely right conditions BUT on a first moose hunt by what sounds as new hunter/s, why would you choose a caliber/cartridge that is not for a large and potentially dangerous game? You would not.

Btw…ballistics are not the same, similar but not the same. 3030 has better ballistics for hunting purposes.

moose travel all day so they may show up anywhere they browse and rest when they want know specific time of day that being said the most active the last 2 hours of daylight
don't waste money on any type of scents especially camouflage type
not knowing when your hunting calling could be a option here in saskatchewan the height of the rut is sept 15 to oct 10
bulls will be wondering around all day and night at that time so bumping into one is very possible
as for a calibre the 7.62x 39 is a bit light for a novice i would shoot a moose with it but it would be with a handl load using a good quality bullet
if possible a 308 win with a 150 gr bullet will be fine i have shot many moose with that combo
As for the keeping shooting practise each to his own i have never done that i have shot 31 moose in 42 years one or sometime two shot if possible the lungs are your best bet
good luck moose the best red meet on the planet

The trails there are overgrown so I will be going through with a clearing saw sometime in the next month to open it up for the 4 wheelers.

Another piece of advice - do NOT penetrate your hunting areas with 4 wheelers until AFTER you down the moose.
They well know what the sound of those machines mean, and will vacate the area.
This is from unfortunate experience.

All fine to go and open up the trails somewhat. And your idea of going early to do so fits with a scouting run.

Cheers

She has a bolt 7.62x39 that's the max so far as she's pretty small . I will try to get her set up on my 308.
Moose season here is end of Sept.
7.62x39 will do just fine inside of 100m with a good well placed bullet!!

End of September is a great time where bull moose are usually quite responsive to the call and not spooked easily!

My 2 cents... I 've hunted Gaspe, so similar territory, I'm guessing. Hunt the open areas/roads at dawn and dusk, when they like to move. After about 8am, they'll bed down and you would have to go after them, although I wouldn't be inclined to this on only 30 acres unless it's close to the end of the season. If you do, try and get yourself a beef scapula. Clean it up and let it dry. Drag on the bushes as you walk - sounds exactly like an antler.

Moose drink twice a day and if you find a swamp, beaver pond or lake with good sign then it might pay off to sit there first light and then again at last light.
Oh and don't forget these three things

1: Sight - don't make to much movement
2: Sound - Be friggin' quiet
3: Smell - Leave the aftershave and strong smelly soap at home

Good Luck

This relic roars to life once a year in late summer to clean up some path ways.

Something we do, although it may or may not help, is to grab a couple of young spruce boughs and rub them over ourselves. At the very least, it makes for a fresher smelling hunting partner.
Here is something I was told looong ago and it seems to work…

Start hanging well used pieces of clothing by you or whom ever is hunting around your hunting spots.

I usually put an old tshirt for a week, after a put a sock or two and so on..until the hunting starts. The earlier you do this the better chance it has to do its job. That way the animals get used to your scent long before the season opens.

By old clothing I mean sometime that has your scent, do not wash it before you hang it 😉

Oh as others said…no smelly soaps, aftershaves and crap lol

works as an antler decoy also
scratching and rubbing can bring on social interaction better than calling when calling is not in season

Water.......don't shoot them in the water

Just imagine coming across someone's tighty-whities hanging in a tree. Scarred for life. :ROFLMAO: (seriously, though, I might try this - with a t-shirt)

My wife got drawn for moose here in NB.
Neither of us have ever been on a moose hunt. Any hunting advice for us?
The man who is second gun has gotten a moose 4 years ago and has some experience.
Practical advice we are looking for.
What calls should we use?
Scent blockers and laundry detergent yes or no?
Stick to the roads or go through the brush?

The area we will be hunting in has about 30 acres that were cut 15 years ago. the rest is a cedar swamp. Lots of moose sign.
