Wow, it didn't took long this halloween afternoon for action to begin.
It wasn't before 14.45pm when I decided to go and sit at my stand for muzzleloader season so I dress and as I load my Tradition 50cal, wonder what kind of damage would this 300gr partition bullet with 120gr 777 do on a deer. Last weekend, we were out and one of the guy got a spike with a 200gr spitzer sabot, at +-50yds, nice hole, about 1" dia, not too big, just below the spine, he dropped there
so I expected similar results.
Slowly, I take the trail from the backyard and a bit of rain is getting my way, it's perfect for walking slow and not making noise I thought but same for the deer. Almost at my stand, I decided not to climb but go sit about 50ft from it, under some natural cover and sat there comfortably as possible on one of these "hunting puffs". Every thing is perfect, the gun is covered fron the rain and I have a good look at the trail, plus it's different point of view of the same spot to watch, time 15.10pm.
It's now calm, no more rain if not just a couple of drops falling from the trees. The other side of my stand, across my position at 120ft, 2 red skwirrels just went in a panic mode and I hear some cracking but can't see anything, time seems to have suspended for a brief moment, my heart beat suddently increase as the noise is approching and a nice doe is slowly comming towards my position at a 30deg angle lower in the gully, she is a nice size doe and is now at about 75ft . I look at her trough the fixed 2x scope and when I cranked the inline ML, she stopped, she heard it but can't figure out where it came from. I have to wait just a bit longer and she will clear a couple of trees and alowe me a shot, .... there she goes 2 more steps and I press the trigger . . . BOUMMM .
Where is she, I know I had her but with the smoke, I lost her
. Then I saw her trough the smoke comming up the hill, passed at 15ft from me and drop 50ft away but out of my sight. I slowly reload the muzzleloader and head in the last direction she took and dropped
. Well, that's what I thought so almost there, I can see her, lying down and she slowly turn her head towards me and BOUMMM, this one in between the ears .... job done, Yeeooooouu, my first deer with a muzzleloader, kinda nice. When I shot her first, she jumped and I hit her low in the chest and she was lower then me, the partition sabot took the whole chest bone out resulting in a hole the size of a baseball, it was a matter of second before she expired but I still took the shot to end the hunt.
Very impressive hunt and no, no meat loss
.
It's now 15.45pm, exactly one hour after I decided to get out .
Some nice meals in perspective, Oh yah, I had a doe tag
, here in zone 10 Qc you need to apply, otherwise, buck only.
Good luck to every one
