First on CNN: Guns used by LA deputies put officers, public at risk, report says

Just read it this morning. I can honestly see this as being an issue when officers are given a new gun that does not have the external safety they were used to. Combined with lack of proper training and lighter trigger pull it is not a surprising stat at all.

Or thought his handgun was actually a Taser. That has happened more than once. :rolleyes:
 
Adding to the problem was some deputies violating a basic firearms safety rule by placing their finger on the trigger prior to making the conscious decision to fire, the report states.

Imagine that....Police Officers deployed without proper training in the use of their sidearm.....
 
In my days on road we ( firearms trainers )
decided NOT to give the pistol light option to the average uniform officer.
We could predict it would be a problem with out proper training.
only Canine and Tactical officers were allowed the light on handgun ( Glock model 22)
and they were trained its a GUN FIRST with optional light, not the other way around.
Tact guys and Canine usually have a lot more training than the average officer in Canada anyway.
LAPD needs to ditch pistol attached light for average officer and keep finger off darn trigger unless decided to fire.
its unfortunate that it is true most police forces (services more warm and cozy) do not train enough with their firearms.
a small number of officer do train more on their own time.

Tyical media stupidity in there, though: lack of training puts the officers and public at risk, but "guns put officers, public at risk" make for a snazzier headline. The only materiel-related issue the report seems to have mentioned is the lack of an external safety, which is again a matter of training the officers, not of the gun being unsafe.
 
So what now?

Do they start getting these incompetent police officers 'off the streets' or do they confiscate the pistols and hand out rubber billies?
