well i finally got out this morning for mulies. Cathy was still sick so she stayed home. This year i only had a mulie doe tag. Well first thing i see is antelope. three herds (which i couldn't find two weeks ago when i was looking for them.) Then all of a sudden out trots a white tail doe. so i stop to watch her (i have a tag) when what trots out behind her but a nice little three pointer. I watch them go over the hill and into the coulée. i park the truck and figure ok i will start hunting here and see if maybe i can get a whitetail today. So i work my way over the ridge and into the coulée but no sign of the white tail. i start working the coulée watch for the white tail but also watch for mulies as this is primary mulie country. well all of a sudden up jump two mulie does. they are not moving very fast so i take the biggest one and take her down with one shot. the other one goes about 20 yards then stops to watch me. finally when i start to move toward my down deer she wises up and takes off. as i move toward my deer i can hear her thrashing around in the cattails. i finally get close enough to see her and i see she is still alive. a quick head shot ends her thrashing. of course now i have to get her out of the cattails. I cut her throat then get my rope on her and pull her across the bottom of the coulée and up onto dry ground. I then hiked back to my truck, parked it on the edge of the coulée and came down with my long rope. i attached it to her hiked back up and tied the rope off to my bumper hitch. She came out no problem. 8:30 am and she is cleaned out and in the truck.
so after cleaning her out and loading her into the truck i poured myself a coffee and started glassing to see if i could find the white tails from this morning. i see a tail heading up one of the side coulées so i figure i am going to take a drive over and see if i can get a shot or not. so park at the top of the other coulée and start heading down it. well first thing i put up is another mulie doe. i watch her go through the coulée and over the other side. i work my way done to th junction and start coming up the next coulée. all of a sudden i see a head tucked up under the bank out of the wind. a quick check with the binoculars and i see it is a mulie buck, a big one. i start walking toward him as he watches me. he finally figures enough is enough and stands up to get a clear look at me. a very nice wide 3 by 3. he turns broadside to me then trots off with me shaking my head about no buck tag this year. as i come to the end of the coulée i start working myself out of it since the very end is very steep almost cliffs. all of a sudden see movement and damn there is another buck but smaller only 2 a side. well the silly little bastard is trying to climb the cliffs. i am laughing at him as he keeps slipping and sprawling out. i figure i had better get around to the top and come in over top of him so he goes down the coulée before he hurts himself. well just as i work my way around to the top of the cliffs here he comes up an dover. of course he was shocked as hell to see me standing about 10 feet from him. he took off but he wasn't moving very fast as he had tied himself out trying to get out of the coulée. at that point i called it a day.
