The pup is now 8 months old, and I had him at the Camp Wainwright special Sharptail Grouse hunt two weeks ago where he did very well. He found five coveys in three hours, and we killed birds. Today we were at a release site South of us and he had his first experience with pheasants. He went into very heavy cover and busted the first bird, but fifteen minutes later he made a solid point on a bird which provided an easy shot for my 28 gauge AYA SxS. We saw numerous birds land, but I wanted him to find birds that he hadn't seen land, so we ignored them. After almost two hours he pointed another rooster quite a ways from me that flushed before I reached him, but the bird gave me a 30 yard passing shot, so I dropped it. He ran over, picked it up, and carried it most of the way to me then dropped it and stood over it. With our limit full, we headed for the truck , but on the way, he pointed several more birds. He is still a pup, but he is learning quickly, and with ten weeks to go in the season, he has a lot of time to learn. And I need to start taking pictures, but unfortunately, I never remember until everything is loaded, and we are on the way home.
