Looking to buy my first pistol and am looking for some advice on what to buy. Looking for a decent quality .22lr for target shooting. A ruger mk 1 or mk2 have been suggested. Any other suggestions would greatly be appreciated .

Thanks

Pretty good suggestions actually and you can add the 22/45 in there as well, basically all variations of the same gun. They are quite accurate, inexpensive to buy, are not fussy about what ammo you can feed them and there are a fair amount of accessories available for them also.

Well I recently decided to join the RPAL crowd as well, and decided on my first pistol, also in .22LR. I chose the GSG 1911 22. Not exactly a dedicated target pistol, but I can't wait to receive my order, and take it out to the range. I'm thinking it's going to be alot of fun. I'm sure you'll get some good feedback here, do your research, and take the plunge. Good luck on your first purchase, and have fun :)

picked up a sig 1911 22 ,first pistol for me too out to the range yesterday loved it
get the performance upgrade from blueline and add in the recoil bushing

I'm in the same situation. Want to get a target pistol.
Currently my dream pistol is a Matchguns MG2. Would have to import it from the factory in Italy or from Holland or Germany.
I initially was going to get a S&W Victory. But decided to just jump in with both feet get something much better. But getting advice has been a painful experience. People seem to really do little more than suggest what they love with no consideration about what makes their choice a good one and for whom it might be a good choice or bad.
I've been told that a match pistol is "too much" for a first gun. I've been told to start with a Buckmark or Ruger and "work my way up". I've been told by different people that different match pistols are super reliable or super finicky.
Biggest PITA is not being able to go somewhere to try a few out.

Picked up a gsg and a k100 for my first two......still got the gsg...still putting lots of rounds through it..goes with me every trip..

While many will recommend a 22lr first, I really don't see a reason not to start with a 9mm. A 9mm will take you much further in learning and training, striker fired polymer 9mm would do. I've always recommended the Ruger SR9, I've brought many new shooters to the range with several pistols and they all gravitated to the SR9, and did very well shooting it.

Thank you for the heads up on the blueline upgrade, I will look into that :)

i you wan't a 22 you have a lot of choices
ruger
browning buckmark
S&W M&P22

if you have the budget
you can take a CZ75in 9mm with the conversion kit 22lr
or sig 226 with conversion kit also
so you have the same platform and ergonomics to practice with 22 and 9mm

For pistols that are more focused on target shooting the Ruger and Buckmark are the two best IMO. Closely related would be the Beretta NEOS if you can tolerate the "Jetsons" styling. :)

There is also the new S&W Victory. I've not yet even seen one, let alone handled and shot one, so I can't suggest where they fit in the quality and feel range.

A top of the line target shooter would be to find a Beretta 87 or a S&W Model 41. Both are better guns than any of the other three. But both are a lot more money.

Of course there's also the used market which frequently has nice Hi Standards and Brownings show up as dedicated target guns.

For guns that have a more mainstream look you can consider the S&W M&P22, the GSG 1911 and the ISSC "sort of Glock". And in the used side of things you can also consider the older S&W 422, 2206 or 22A as nice options. On the higher priced side of this design style there's the Kimber 1911-22 and the CZ Kadet.

Actually the two Kadets I've seen in use suggest that you can have BOTH with that one gun. Dedicated target gun like accuracy with mainstream styling all in one. They shoot AMAZINGLY well. But at a cost. They ain't cheap by any means.

SW22 Victory looks like a good ticket.

I have a Ruger Mark III, and I think it's absolute garbage. Just the cheapest, cost-cutting manufacturing. They make the outside look nice, but the insides look rough, everything is sort of just beat together (you can see the hammer marks), and the grip screws they use only have something like 1-1/2 thread turn contact so they'll strip easily. Shoots good, though.

If you're going to shoot .22lr there's nothing quite like shooting it out of the 617. It feels like a hand cannon and shoots like a laser beam.
