First Pistol - Are Beretta Model 76's or 89's good target pistols?

I have found a few used Beretta Model 76's for around $280 (CDN) in decent shape, and they have a Beretta Model 89 in better shape for $425. Only been to the range a few times, and had my mind set on a Browning Buckmark target or field model, but after shooting the Buckmarks, Rugers, and a High Standard Supermatic and a S&W 41, the need for a brand new gun disappeared, and I wanted something I could shoot well. I shot the S&W and the High Standard much much better than the others, and that was with little practice so far. I found these Beretta's, and really like the looks, but there aren't any around to shoot. I am on a budget, more because I plan on buying a centerfire pistol as well in the near future, but I am leaning towards the Model 89. Is this a good choice for target shooting, or should I wait for a used S&W 41? Or should I just go for the model 76? Or hold out for a used 41?Thoughts? I read somewhere that the Berettas only have an 8 round mag, does that cause problems with modern competition in any way?

Thanks in advance!!

not with a .22 caliber guns....Don't theu only load 5 rounds in the bullseye match anyways?

I'd go with Beretta 89 as well!

The Beretta model 89 sounds like a good deal. They compare favourably with the S&W model 41 & the target model High Standards.

Had all three...Beretta 89, Smith 41 and a High Standard Supermatic Trophy. Of the three, the one I kept was the High Standard.

KIX,
If you want to put $425 to buy a .22, I think you better off wait a little bit and buy a centerfire pistol. Good gun like CZ or G17 are about 600's NIB.

Thanks for the replies! I am also trying to get a price on the Baikal IZH-35M target pistol, supposed to be very accurate as well. Anyone shot them before?

I would like to buy the .22 first for practice and cheap ammo, then a 9mm for competition like IPSC or something once I'm a decent shot. It's not a big money issue, more of an allocation of funds for the new pistol hobby, since I have also bought some long gun necessities lately too! Plus, I have to try to keep the wife happy.

Well, I have a Model 89 coming this week from Tradex, so I sure hope I made the right choice, as so far I tend to keep my guns rather than trade them. If things go well, I may post the pics and range report once it comes in.
Also, Ellwood Epps let me know that the Baikal I was thinking about is undergoing some changes and not available.

I have a Beretta 76. It is a good club grade/plicker but no, it is not in the same league as a HS Supermatic or S&W 41 but it also doesn't cost nearly as much. It just depends what you want to spend and what you want to do with it.

I also own a HS Supermatic Military. Its a terrrific gun and usually quite a bit cheaper than a S&W 41 in similar condition. I've only shot a borrowed 41 a couple of time but I preferred the HS.

I think you made the right choice going with the 89 over the 76... Been a later model spare parts and magazines will certainly be easier to find.

The IZH35 are great guns, but haven't been imported since Armrus closed shop a few years back. They can be somewhat finicky with their magazines...

Don't worry about the comments saying the Beretta is more of a plinking gun... Should you ever be able to outshoot your 89, you will also be outshooting 98% of the shooters on the firing line!

Safe shooting,
Mike.

I have an 89, S&W 41 and several others. They have different feels as to how they balance in your hand. You made an excellent choice.

As mike said above, it is extremely accurate.
