Hey guys, hope this is the right section for this.

Anyways I just got my PAL and I'm looking for my first pistol. I'm looking for something:
- accurate
- inexpensive ammo
- easy to maintain - don't mind doing maintenance though, so this isn't a big deal
- sub $1500

What would a couple options be? Thanks

sorry, should have specified that i have my restricted as well.

secondary consideration is that i would like to get into competitive shooting eventually.

thanks

Handguns are specialized tools.

If you would consider, and then share with us your primary intended use - what job it is that you would like this handgun to be able to do well - we will be better able to narrow down likely sources for it.

But, generally speaking...

Your first rifle should be a .22LR.
Your first revolver should be a .22LR.
Your first pistol should be a .22LR.

And, generally speaking, for a first centrefire pistol, a 9mm Glock is a fine choice.

I think you'll have a lot of answer......

.45acp = too expensive
.357= Normaly revolver
.40sw = good balance but à little $$$
9mm = cheap and fun
.22lr = very cheap, fun but boring on the long term.

You could buy a Nice service type pistol and à .22lr for less than 1500$
Ex: Glock 17 and ruger MKIII for 1200$

Get yourself a 1911

For your purposes I'd suggest a Kimber which are great pistols, well made and accurate as hell. Then get yourself one of the Kimber .22 conversion kits (as well made as their .45 caliber counterpart) so you can practice for cheap. Then you've got yourself a great IPSC gun as well as a cheap plinker/practice gun for your budget.

Don't let anyone tell you not to get a 1911, its the greatest pistol ever made!! :D
You're gunna want the .45 cause those crack heads aren't gonna go down with the sh*tty 9 mil!!

A .22 calibre pistol or revolver of your choice. Until you learn to shoot well, you're just throwing away money and making lots of noise by shooting centerfire.

I've seen a review or two on Kimber's which slam their parts, apparently quality has dropped in the last cpl years?
I do like this idea though...1911's are ###y. I might lean towards a 9mm though just so I can blast cheaply for now.
What other brands would be good for a 9mm 1911?

I do like the M&P 9mm, seems like a solid well built pistol.

I've always liked Sig's, its a little more expensive than the M&P9 though.

Thanks for all the info guys!

if your looking for all that you should be looking at a gun new or used for around $700 or less. i would never spend more then $1000 on a gun before you know what you are doing. get a used glock(5-600?) or if you are willing to spend more a refurb sig226(8-900?). then once you know what you like spend the big money.

My first pistol was a G17 and have never regretted that choice. I have owned better and worse guns, but always will keep my Glock. I have let friends and my wife shoot it. I have shot IPSC, 3gun, ect. Now with a full compliment of Glocks am venturing out tried a couple 1911's not my thing, maybe if I bought a $3000 1911 it would be different. I have a CZ shadow coming, read good reviews. I would like to try a sig.

A glock is a working gun, if you are looking for Pretty, or Race, Ect. you may want to look at different manufacture.

I am sure if my first gun was a sig, or cz, or a 1911 I would be a sig,cz,1911 guy. I think you'll find people will recommend what they own, all for good reasons.

However what ever gun you choose get a holster, mag holders, dummie rounds, ect and do a lot of dry practice learn your gun. Until you can manipulate it like a pro, there is great info and drills out there. Get smooth and comfortable, keeping safety paramount, this will show when you are at the range. Start slow, and diliberate, speed will come once you have learned the new skill set.
