First pistol opinons wanted

For full metal frame I recommend
- CZ 75 Shadow SP01
- Sig P266
- Browning Hi-Power
I would stay away from the 1911's if you want something reliable your going to have to pay top dollar for it in 1911 form...

I own a Cz 75b shadowline. 9 mm. Its easier to find than the sp 01. It is a terrific shooter for a very reasonable price. My cousins both bought the range kits and regret their decision now after shooting the cz. I find it very easy to break down and clean. This is my favorite of the
Four handguns I own.

The mid price 1911's can be very nice and highly reliable. Norincos are MOSTLY OK but now and then you get one that needs some aftermarket TLC to get it running as right as they should be. The place that makes Norincos just has too broad an opinion of what is "OK". So you need to consider that any Norinco you get MIGHT be more of a project gun than a shoot well right from the box. They'll all work but some of them are not so smooth on the controls or have other oddities.

In any event I'd strongly suggest you consider ammo costs unless you only plan on shooting at most 50 to 100 rounds a month. If you'll be more normal and get to the range about once a week and perhaps take up one of the competition events in your area you can expect this to rise to by 7 to 10 times as much. And when that occurs it's a LOT cheaper to buy 9mm than it is .45ACP.

And I would also suggest that if you like all metal that you add the various 9mm 75 based all metal CZ's onto your list of options.

I had two 1911s, a Remington R1 and a Smith & Wesson enhanced that cost twice as much. The Remington was by far the better pistol. I also love the High Power although I've never owned one: Canadian connection and less expensive 9mm ammo.

Off the wall suggestion -- Tokarev. A ton of fun to shoot (really big BANG but negligible recoil), built like a tank, and price only slightly above free. Needs a wrap-around grip to feel right.

For full metal frame I recommend
- CZ 75 Shadow SP01
- Sig P266
- Browning Hi-Power

I think you mean Sig P226. I would highly recommend the 226. All metal but weight wise midway between a full steel and a plastic. I have one; put many rounds, well into the 1000's, through it with no problems. Reloads, commercial, FMJ, copper plated etc. high power, low power makes no difference. Looks the same today as it did the day I bought it new. Super easy to strip and clean, very reliable, very accurate but if you go that way get the Short Reset Trigger. Great gun, my favourite and my gun of choice if the s--t hit the fan.

I also have a Ruger SR1911. Only 350 rounds through it so far but accurate and reliable with a variety of rounds. Very nice feel and look if you like the 1911 style. I wouldn`t trust it as much as the Sig but that is more by reputation than actual experience. More expensive to shoot but only by a few cents a round if you reload. Not quite as easy to strip and clean as the Sig but still pretty simple. I don`t agree with the comment about top dollar required for a 1911 my Ruger is reasonably priced and seems pretty good. From what I have read the Remington R1 seems pretty good too but I have no personal experience. However, any 1911 is a bit more complex and a bit more fussy than the newer gun designs. Having said that I really like the feel and ergonomics of the 1911. Everything just seems to be in the right place. Very easy to shoot well.

Have you considered a 1911 chambered in 9mm? Best of both worlds. I have a Kimber 1911 in .45 acp and found I like it way better than any of my other autos, but .45 is expensive to shoot.

Beretta 71 in .22. A damn nice pistol for the price. It looks and feels like your shooting a real pistol without the expensive ammo. Mine gobbles up any ammo I put in it!

Have owned Colt and S&W 1911's and they've proven to be very reliable. In the process of buying a Glock 17 or a Sig P226. I want a combat pistol now, not something that i have to baby so much. I recommend the Sig P226 if you don't want a "plastic" firearm.

Stick with a 9mm for cheap readily available ammo.
STI Spartan in 9
S&W M&P 9
CZ75 Shadow
Glock 17

Or if you want to go high end, Sig, HK or semi custom 1911.

Revolver means a S&W or Ruger in 357 or 38 special.
357 means you can shoot high end magnum or cheap 38 special.

Get whatever tickles your fancy. The reality is that unless you get into competing, or seldom visit the range, you will probably get bored with everything. That's why gun nuts (like us) end up with so many guns. I'm completely bored with .22lr guns and my current 9mm's. That's why I'm looking into a .45 and cap and ball revolver.

While it may seem like a really important decision, most all guns on the market are great and you will probably have fun with any/all of them. You can always sell them too.

First of all, do you plan on reloading? Second, how is your mechanical aptitude? .45 ammo is expensive and 1911s (especially budget ones) require more maintenance than more modern designs.

If you just want something that you can take out of the box and go shooting, a Glock 17 or S&W M&P would be a better choice.

The BHP and the CZ 75 are both somewhere in the middle; less maintenance-intensive than a 1911, but more so than the modern polymer guns.

Nice gun mate they do look good. I made my purchase already maybe a 9mm next when i get board there is advice in what ever as eventually no matter what one will get board... not just in firearms but cars, games, sports ect.

Yea my mind was set for the Hi power or GI 1911 some where along this thread and would not move so I went for one. I fell in love with the look of the colt Government 1911, the operation is familiar and mechanically with firearms I am fairly adept. So this pistol covers it all. Minus ammo I will pay for it but will be worth it. I don't think I will get into reloading but could be a smart investment for the future when I own a house and more space?

Any ways I started the transfer and paid for the Colt Government 1911 and am excited for it to come in. Then waiting for the range to get me off the top of the waiting list and as an active member to shoot it. I bought it with 2 more 7rnd GI style mags to Btw

Ranger Out.

Just sold my Colt Gold Cup Trophy to finance an optic and I'm regretting it already... You can never go wrong with Colt. Congratulations. Pick up a few Wilson Combats magazines for the Colt from Wolverine Supplies next time they're in stock. They can't even be compared to the GI style magazines.
