Got my RPAL in the mail looking at making my first pistol purchase thinking 9mm any opinions would be great! only looking to spend about 800$ on one for now

Boy... did you ever open up a can of worms!!!!

Any hints as to preference? All metal, polymer, revolver etc etc?

i have shot before yes, located in vernon bc, not aware of either of my closest ranges having rentals, preferance goes to all steel and poly, not a glock guy like the 1911 not the price tho. reently looked at an IWI jericho and a steyr LA1 40

Can't go wrong with a steel framed Jericho 941.

First decide what you want to do with it.

Target shoot (Static at the line) or Action Shoot (Holster and movement)

Then the choice is between Striker fired / Polymer or Metal.

Striker fired options:
Glock 17
S&W M&P
Sig P320

Metal
CZ 75b
budget 1911 platform
Beretta 92

The reason I put those up is there are a TON of accessories readily available (mags, holsters, sights, grips, etc) as well as a TON of online resources (reviews, training hints, articles, technical stuff) available for these firearms.

I suggest you start with one of these widely used 'classic' pistols and go from there. No need to get too fancy or spend too much $$$ until you have some experience and know which way you are headed.

My first was a G17 and second was a CZ 75b. Many thousands of rounds through both, I still shoot them regularly and love em!

im open to used as well yes thats always an option ans i mean it really depends on the feel of the gun right? i know steel guns are better for recoil and poly is better for weight some feel good in my hands some dont but when i walk into the gun shop i just have no idea what to ask for right

There are cheaper 1911 options the Jericho is a great gun it if your leaving towards that then keep leaning to the cz shadow

i did really like the jericho amd read some decent reviews on it but was hoping to find someone who owns one

I had a steel framed Jericho 941 in 40S&W. I was downsizing and a buddy at the range really wanted it, so I sold it.
Big mistake, I missed it so much I went looking for another. The second one I got had the same nice, light trigger pull and was just as accurate.

If you like steel, 1911 and 9mm....you may want to look at a Browning Hi-power. As everyone is aware, JMB designed the BHP as an improved 1911;)

i do like th cz platform just wanted to start off in a bit more of an affordable gun

Used Shadows are in your price range - heck a new one on sale is 830 plus tax out of Ontario (when Tenda gets them back in stock)
AFAIK Del Selin might have a used one in the shop in Vernon. Go in Tuesday and talk to Aron.
The EE here has a few for sale, just over your price range but most have extras (more mags, grip changes etc). Around $850-900 to your door from what I see searching there.

As per trebor2880 the Jerico 941 (Baby Eagle) is a CZ 75 clone - nice gun for the price.
FWIW I own a Shadow and have shot a friends 941 - pretty much the same feel.

I'm not a Norinco fan as they are hit and miss but you could check them out. $350-400 plus tax in 9mm or 45ACP (1911 style). Well under your price range and would get you a bunch of ammo to go along with the pistol for your $800.

What range do you belong to?
I shoot at Armstrong and Oceola. Show up at either range when there are shooters there and generally they are happy to let you try their pistols...
