First Pistol Recommendations

There is nothing beginning with a 9mm.

I personaly prefer having two gun in my safe instead of one with a conversion kit, best buck for the bang for a 22pistol is either a Browing Buckmark or a Ruger Mark II or III, reliable and flawless...

My opinion has always been to find a firing range that rents handguns to shoot (they usually don't need you to have a PAL): try a 9mm in everything they have. I did that and found out what I like: heavy semi-auto loading brutes full of steel, like a 1911 or a Sig and the heavy magnum revolvers. Luckily the Sig P226 and the 1911 both have the .22LR conversion kits.

I really, really, really... after making the mistake of buying an awesome gun that I could not shoot worth sh!t (S&W Sigma)... can never say enough good things about going one time to a range and paying the money to know what you shoot best. Also, don't be afraid to ask the range officer watching you for shooting pointers.

Once I did that one expensive range trip (I spent about $100) to buy boxes of 9mm and shoot everything they had I have never made a buying mistake based on what I can shoot since.

Same here I don't like to have to futz with a 22 that needs lots of "fixes" to shoot reliably
