First Pistol suggestions?

.38 Special is more expensive than 9mm but cheaper than most others ( .22 notwithstanding). And revolvers are always a good choice.

In my opinion you need at least one .22 pistol. For the bigger calibre check out the Girsan Yavuz. It's a turkish made beretta that goes for $400-550.

I'd normally recommend a good 22LR first but you seem really on the fence about a handgun.. Do you know somebody or have a range nearby that rents because I'd try that before throwing money down.

Now if you are sure about the purchase and are likely to keep it, I'd spend the money on a good 22LR.
GSG1911 - 22LR - ~$399.99 - 1911 full size frame - Tons of Aftermarket Support - Cheap way to sling tons of lead down range
S&W (6)17 -22LR- ~$550 USED (Good+) - K Frame revolver - Grips for all hand sizes - Older the better IMO but all are lasers with very good triggers
M&P 22 - 22LR - ~$450 - M&P semi in 22LR - Unsure of market support - Accurate and reliable but I found it to not fit a few hands.

If you are dead set on something with a bit more oomph
Glock 17 - 9mm - ~$500 USED (VG+) - Polymer semi - Tons of aftermarket support - Highly regarded by some.
CZ75B - 9mm - ~$550 USED (VG+) - Steel Semi - Tons of aftermarket Support - Accurate and reliable with brass (mixed with aluminum/steel).
Alfa Proj - 357 or 9mm - ~$550 - SA/DA Revolver - Few official grip choices - Unsure of long term reliability but looks OK and members seem to be having luck with it.
Girsan Regard - 9mm - ~$450 - 92FS Semi Clone - Unsure of 92FS aftermarket crossover - Good clones that seem pretty reliable.
Ruger SR9 - 9mm - ~$500 - Smaller Semi - Haven't seen much aftermarket - Its ruger.

Sorry my sub-500 experience is mostly 9mm's.. I tested a lot of them before buying a CZ75B myself haha.

*********Now as for any recommendation, this is just a suggestion and I highly recommend you feel/try any firearm you maybe leaning towards before buying************

just as a note, if you know any veterans or currently active military, stay away from Norinco. Norinco supplies the same forces that are shooting over our guys' heads. I no longer own any Norinco kit.

I do love .38 special as a cartridge. Just sucks paying 30 bucks a box. Very cheap to shoot if you reload with wheel weights though!

Any 6" revolver in .357 Magnum if you can find it, like an old Ruger. That will get you excited everytime you go out.

Rather than getting all bummed out about the short sight radius semi-auto and "What am I doing wrong?" kind of feeling, it'll make you a great shooter in short order.

If you can only have one, the .357 is it. Don't waste your money on .38 specials unless it is +P. Boring...

I always say pick the caliber you want first then go fondle handguns in that caliber to see what fits your hands the best. It's the two most important factors. Price is the last thing I worry about.

Thanks again guys. 9mm would be perfect for me. Even though Ive never owned or shot a handgun, I tend to prefer all steel. Ive been thinking with the advice given that a Cz75 or 75b might be the gun for me. Well see. :)
