First Pistol (Update)

Well said! That's a good point, that there's going to be compromise. I'm just not sure whether comfort and fit is better to compromise than all the other aspects I like (manual safety, lightness, mag release and a better deal).

Would you consider weight to be an advantage or disadvantage? Why or why not?

Again, it depends on what you're going to be doing with the pistol. Light guns will have 'more' felt recoil but are 'faster' to point and swing between targets. I put both these qualities in quotes because it's all really subjective...

Since it's your first pistol and you're not going to be carrying it day to day I don't think you'll notice any difference due to the weight.
 
Well probably IDPA or something along those lines. If it makes any difference I could empty a Glock pretty quickly, as well as a S&W (and still hit something).

I wouldn't have near the amount of money, but I was told that if I don't like the ergonomics of the USP then I could send it back for a refund. Only thing is, I'd only be able to compare it if I was able to shoot a SIG at some point.

Remember one important aspect if you are deciding on the use for a USP. The mag release is on the trigger guard, activating it means that your finger is near the trigger which gives RSO's a fit in IDPA matches and such if you don't remind them.
 
Oh okay, I'll be sure to keep that in mind. The mag release is one of the reasons I'm taking this actually, as I can drop a mag with my middle finger instead of having to re-adjust my hand like with the SIG.

Again having both, I'm not sure which mag release I like better. The Sig fits my hand so I don't have to adjust to drop a mag. The USP release is excellent but I've had problems with it while wearing gloves (the button is a little small).

Honestly, just pick one (the best deal probably) and go for it! :rockOn:

You need to spend your time shooting not getting mired in the endless debate over what is 'better' - especially since you've narrowed your choice to two of the finest pistols available today.
 
Oh okay, yeah that'd make the decision a bit harder but yeah I can't reach the mag release without adjusting my hand (I discovered I don't have "big" hands, I just have long-ish fingers). Thanks for the encouragement! Yeah I'm pretty much picking the best deal here :p.

Oh I'd love to spend time shooting but I don't have my RPAL yet so I go on here until that time comes (should be soon now, I'm going to start pestering the CFC).

I've always wanted a USP (more specifically a Mk23 or a USP Tactical but both of those are in .45, are more than what I need and way above my price range), so I figured a USP in 9mm would be a good choice. What do you think? Would you still recommend a .22 pistol?

fat tony - Good luck! Yeah I might be getting my dad's old .357 from South Africa so hopefully that works out.

calvin - Already set on a USP, $1000+ for a non-tweaked 1911 with 2 mags doesn't sound like the most splendid idea for my first pistol.

Well, not from Taurus as I've heard from reliable sources their "customer service" in Canada sucks. :p

But it wouldn't be hard to find quality parts to keep the 1911 running if something should fail................. ;)

Don't get me wrong, though.... If I come across a Taurus 1911 at a reasonable price I'll try one on.... ;)
