First Powder coats!

I like the look of those 440gr boolits for the 500 Spawn. Very nice. Did you try them, or has anyone tried their boolits, with gas checks? If the mold is a gas check design. I run my 500 S&W pretty hot out of a Handi-rifle and would never get away with not using a GC. (without PC). What am I going to do with all those gas checks if this works out?

I can't remember if I have loaded any 400gr or 440gr with Lil gun or h110, but I will for the my next range trip and see how it goes. I tried some 440gr with 36gr of imr4227 and had zero leading.

I tried putting gas checks on after paint, and it's a pain. I might try before but I doubt I'll need it. I will load some 375gr (they come out to 400gr usually) with h110 and let you know how it goes.

I have about 2500 hornady gas checks still and lots of lube that I will still use up, but for now it's mainly powder coating. Once it gets colder out I will shoot more.

Heres my first try from this morning. Powder from powder365.
Tumbled dry bullets in a margarine tub with green airsoft bb's and put on tray with pliers. Air Cooled after baking in convection oven.
A few patchy places but quite good for 1 coat, definitely shootable!

Found out why you're supposed to use parchment paper or non-stick coated aluminum foil. I now have a bunch of 45-70 bullets with aluminum "gas checks" on them
Wont come off, are inconsistent, and some are rigid and sticking out the side past the bullet shank coated in paint. Looks like I'll be remelting them.

I am going to try powder coated bullets with black powder cartridge though; don't know if anyone has tried this before. Loading 55gr of Goed FFg, 1/8" .460" fibre wad, 32ACP case of melted SPG lube, and 340gr powder coated .459" bullet on top. Same recipe I use for my 400gr paper patched which work great so I figured I'd give it a go. Will report back.

Ok, so you guys are powder coating pure lead bullets to save money on lube when reloading, and this also decreased leading of the barrel? What happens when you melt down the cast powder coated rounds to mould new ones. What does the powder do, just make slag on the top and you remove it with flux? Or does this damage the bullet if you wanted to reuse the lead?

It's just polyester, so it should just burn off and float on top like the copper on plated buÄşlets. I haven't recovered more than a couple and I don't have enough to make a melt worthwhile. I'll certainly confirm if I do get to try it.

Auggie D.

Probably been asked but in my quick scan i didnt see it.

How fast are guys pushin these without GC (specifically 30cal)
I'm well under 2000fps but I assume they can do at least the same as normally lubed plain base bullets; around 1700fps with the right alloy. Some guys over on the cast boolits forums say they have chronied PC'ed bullets with GC's at 3000fps with no leading and good accuracy. They normally GC and size the bullets after PC'ing.

For me it isn't about pushing the velocity but being able to shoot cast in a couple rifles I have that are notorious for really bad leading. I have a Marlin 44 mag that leads and keyholes with low end 44 special loads if I don't use jacketed bullets and a 45-70 single shot that leads badly past around 1600fps but is still accurate at that point. Now I can shoot both rifles at slightly higher velocities (I haven't worked up to see how far I can go) without having to worry about spending hours scrubbing lead out of bores.

I'm not sure you save much if anything as the PC paint isn't much cheaper than lube. As I mentioned above I do it to stop leading in a couple specific rifles that are really prone to it.
When you melt down PC'ed bullets it just smokes and leaves some crap on the top of the pot. You don't need to flux to remove it as it isn't metal; it's burnt plastic. Fluxing is meant to re-alloy the metals if they've separated. I just scoop off the black tar crap and dump it in my slag bucket.
I wouldn't recommend breathing the smoke; doubly so if you aren't using TGIC-free PC paint. I use a 2-cartridge respirator when doing anything smokey involving lead (remelting lubed bullets, smelting WW's, etc.)

Did my first 50 PC bullets and they look great and was super easy using the shake and bake method (gloss black). My plan is to use them for match ammo to cut down on the smoke. I don't usually notice the smoke when I am shooting a stage but watching video afterwards it looks like a chimney fire out of the 45! Going to take the off season to test these loads for accuracy/issues.

Forgive me, but what powders are you choosing ie what category from powder365.

i usually search in the classic colours section, or search for a colour i like. kawasaki green and tool blue worked great for me and stuck really well.

Thanks spawn. Have you tried from any of the other categories?

i ordered silverado silver from the chrome/silvers section and it coated nicely, at least it looks like it, but i think it will need 2 coats. i shot 50 of them through my 1911 and it seamed to lead up pretty bad. i'm still investigating, but i haven't been shooting for some time. i also ordered phantom wet white high gloss from the mirrors section, seems to coat alright, but a powder coat gun would be best IMO.

I'm sorry to hear that about the silverado silver.....I bought some as well, but haven't had a chance to try it yet
