after f55 posted about his powder coated rounds and provided a site to buy powder from i decided to give it a shot. i had heard about it from cast boolits when the craze started, but didn't really think much of it. i'm waiting to hear back on a used toaster oven to do things properly, but in the mean time i used a hot air gun and went over each bullet for a minute or so. i preheated the bullets and tumbled them in a food container for 15 seconds until they looked coated enough. once i get a toaster oven i will tumble them longer and clean the bullets before heating them, but i just wanted to see what they looked like.

i did some 124gr 9mm, 230gr 45acp and 3 different (400gr, 500gr, 600gr) 500mag rounds. i will also do some 110gr 357mag with 22gr of h110 to see how they like going fast :)

the colours i got were,
1 ea. PATINA GREEN $5.50
0.5 ea. SAFETY YELLOW $9.88
0.5 ea. RAL 3000 FLAME RED $11.56
0.5 ea. PHANTOM WET WHITE HIGH GLOSS $6.87

i mixed the yellow and green in hopes to get lime green or zombie green but it would seem that the yellow stuck better and separated out which is why they look blotchy. i also did a smash test and even with a crappy coat and bake, it's on there good! i sized them with a lee push through and the lyman/rcbs H&I dies without issue other then getting small chips from the flashing in the die, but that's just a matter of cleaning.

pictures!

Give them a good scrub with an acetone or paint thinner soaked rag to see if the paint comes off. If it does, it's not cured and it will not stand up to being shot. If it doesn't come off, you're good to go. Yeah, it's unfortunate that powders don't really mix to give new colors. Did you swirl them or tumble them? Tumbling knocks the powder back off but swirling works really good. Don't flip or shake them, just a gentle swirl in one direction for about 2 minutes. And don't be too discouraged by poor results as not all powder works good for the dry tumble method. Off to a good start though!

Spawn, try a second coat :)

I ordered RAL 6018 YELLOW GREEN(dont know if you call it zombie green) and blue.

Kawasaki Green is close enough to Zombie Green for me, I've contemplated ordering some. It's pretty expensive though and who really knows how well it will work?

good to know, i have some baking right now that i will test once they are done and cooled. the swirl seems to work alot better vs tumbling as it all falls off. i'm using red right now and it doesn't stick very well, not like the yellow.

that's the one i wanted, but you had to order 1lb so i didn't get it.

Powder356 also has Nuclear Lime Green, Toxic Waste Green, and Fluorescent Green, all available in 1/2 lb batches although the fluorescent green is still $17.54 for half a lb.

got some more cooked up, i double coated them. still not a perfect coat, but alot better then the first ones lol.

(red = 105gr 357mag with 21.5gr H110, White = 124gr 9mm)

more coating fun! i noticed if you don't bell the case enough it will scrap the paint, so i might invest in some lyman m dies.
