For a long time now I have wanted to build a custom long range rifle setup.
Reality is that I have no real reason to, or any need to, but as most guys will agree who get hooked on this sport, I'm going to do it anyways, just because I want to.
Growing up shooting Sako's in my fathers collection, and building a collection of my own, is driving me to build one on a Sako action.
Then comes the caliber selection, I have a Sako 75 in 7mm STW and absolutely love the caliber. Great long range capability, .284 bullet selection is awesome, recoil is manageable, add a muzzle brake and its great.
So, here's where I'm starting. I have a Sako m995 TRGs rifle in 7mm STW that is going to become my donor action. I think so I am going to go with a Krieger
SS Barrel in #5 Bull sporter weight 26" finished length. (I would go with a heavier profile, but I may decide to hunt periodically with this rig) I haven't decided on the twist rate yet, I am thinking 1-9 but may opt for the 1-8 for heavier VLD bullets.
I am going to put the rifle in the Whiskey-3 Chassis from Kinetic Research. The Chassis requires use of a AI magazine.
Optics will be the last decision I will make on the set-up. I would like to outfit it with a Nightforce 5.5-22x56 NXS NP R1, Opti-lock bases and Rings I have for all my other rifles, I like them, but maybe someone could chime in with other good recommendations.
I haven't decided on what kind of muzzle brake to use, but I will have one installed. Yes I know they are loud and all the implications. 99% of the time I am shooting by myself, and am not bothering anyone with the muzzle blast.
I will likely look at a bi-pod set-up as I near completion. Probably the m-pod from Mystic Precision.
Am I out to lunch considering this build? Any recommendations about the components I have chosen, or any you would not recommend?
I am also looking for anyone with experience with the Whiskey 3 Chassis.
Thanks in advance.
