That is correct. Thats why I'm considering the .280AI. Lots of mag room for long bullets seated out.
 
There is no simple way to reduce a bolt face on a solid bolt.

If the action is in a magnum bolt face now, the mag and follower and rails are also set up for the magnum cases. It will be much easier to stick with a belted magnum unless you want to throw huge amounts of $$ at this receiver.

Jerry at Mystic Precision has been very helpful to me in deciding what parts to use and so on. So I am going to send it to his guy at Black Art Rifle Company to have the machine work done.

Terry at black art rifle does a very good job too. got mine back around month ago and very happy with it and am sending him another one building from mark5 action.

You will be very pleased with his work.
 
To update my build,
Terry at Black Art Rifles is currently working on my rifle. He is installing the new Kreiger barrel and brake. He has inspected the original m995 barrel and says it will easily be saved, so he is going to re-time it and properly chamber it. This way, I can swap the original barrel back in, should I want to restore the original m995 for hunting.
The Whiskey 3 chassis has arrived, and is being shipped to me this week.
For optics, I am about 90% decided on a Leupold Mark IV 6.5-20x50 with the TMR reticle, and M1 turrets. It will most likely be mounted in Optilocks.
I will post pictures as soon as I get it all here and finish assembly.
 
Well Christmas has come again at my place. Everything was delivered this week to finish putting my custom Sako STW together. Now if only the weather would turn around, so the road will melt out to get to our club.

Nice build. Why 7STW instead of 7RemMag? The latter has plenty of capacity to push heavy .284 bullets to impressive velocities.

Not beating you up, just curious why you felt you wanted such an overbore Chambering?

I can't remember exactly, but it wasn't too bad. Around 2-3 months. I would guess longer now, due to the panic in the USA.

Marcoman, I know the 7RM is a great caliber, I just started loading for the STW a year or so ago, and absolutely love it. So I stuck with it for this build.
 
Not trying to highjack, just want to share some info.

A few years back I was looking for a different mounting solution for my Sako 75 because I dislike the optilock system and wanted a picatinny rail.
Somebody told me that Richard @ Near was making them, so I called Richard and asked if I could buy a rail for my Sako 75 SM.
He told me that he wasn't making them for the SM yet because he didn't have the specific measurements of the action he needed, and didn't have an action on hand to measure.
He asked if I had a caliper handy, I did, so Richard told me what measurements he needed, I measured and read them off to him and in no time at all he had a rail shipped out to me.

Here are a couple of pictures of the rail Richard made for me, mounted on my Sako 75 SM 300WSM.
I had my local gunsmith drill and tap for 8-40 screws that came with the rail.

The craftsmanship that Richard puts into his products is second to none.

I have since sold that Sako, rail and all... I miss her :(
 
Well, it's been a long time coming, but I finally narrowed down my load development and got a chance yesterday to try my STW out at 500 yards. (Thanks Redmist25)
I only did some preliminary load development / barrel break in earlier, I figured out where my pressure signs were showing up to see what kind on velocities I would be able to work with.
The problem was, it was spraying groups all over the paper something horrible. I was a bit discouraged. 3-4 " groups at 100 yards was scaring me, with a build like this.
So last week, I tried the same powder load with the only change being seating depth. The magazine allows 3.785" OAL so originally that's what I had worked with. So that's where I started, and each "new" load was .020" shorter.
The results surprised me to say the least. The starting group 3.785" was probably 4" @ 100 yards, but each group following decreased in size. At 3.705" the group was well under an inch, then it slowly started to open up again as OAL was worked down to 3.655" (only to just over an inch)
I have never really worked a load just changing the OAL before, I did not think it would make such a drastic difference. Obviously I'm still learning.

Yesterday, I had an opportunity to go to a private range and try it out at 500 yards. Dialed the drop into the scope, 6.5 MOA from a 100 yard zero, and smashed the 12" steel plate first try. Adjusted a tad for wind, and put the next 4 shots into about a 5" group on the plate. I was very happy for my first attempt at shooting steel at 500 yards. Redmist25 was showing me up, shooting offhand, he put 4 shots in under 5" on the Ram target. I need a lot more practice offhand apparently. Fun trying though.

If I can get this STW dialed in like my 6 PPC, I would be really happy. I shot about a 3" 4 shot group with it at 500 yards with it. (Sorry, tooting my own horn)

I got to shoot with Fire306 yesterday, a good time was had by both. I am very impressed with the 7 STW, especially the effectiveness of the muzzle break. The wife, from inside the trailer parked nearby, says "What the hell were you shooting out there?" There were some impressive groups shot, looks like I need to work on my bench techniques a little though. Let's see some pics Fire306, you can email me some too for the scrap book.
 
Here's a couple of photos.
6 PPC off the bench 527 yards. First 4 shots were the best, the wind lulled for the 5th and I didn't compensate enough, thus the left flyer.


Redmist25's group offhand at 527 yards. He had the same issue, first 4 shots were amazing, 5th was a bit of a flyer in the wind. Remember, he's doing this offhand.
