first Precision Rifle build. (FINSHED WITH PICS UP PAGE 2)

i am just looking for some criticism my the build i am currently working on. any ideas or tips would be wicked. (pics to come soon)

Stock- McMillan ADJ A3-5 with integral cheek piece and hinged floorplate
Action- Remington 700xcr
Cal- 338. win mag
Barrel- Remington 26" stainless (free floated)
Scope/Base/Rings- Bushnell 6500 elite tactical 4.5x16 / 20MOA EGW base/ 30mm EGW low profile Rings
Bipod- Harris 1A2 6"x9"
Work- Barrel has been threaded for a brake and re-crowned with a target crown and glass beading

Jeff it depends what you want to shoot
If its F class your in trouble because of barrel heat generated from 338 is major problem shooting 17 rounds at a match on hot summer day the the Remington Barrel is to light, great cartridge if you can handle recoil.
Friend shoots f class with same gun in .308 had to change barrel to much heat.

I like the EGW bases but I would go with there steel bases for 338

The 30x 6500 would be a better choice for long range shooting

Just my 2c
Just get shooting it I am sure you will be pleased
Any game way out there is in serious touble with your build

:D i did go with there steel base. and i couldent be happer. there rings are also very nice. i was looking at the 30x 6500 but decided to go with the 16 power. i find 30x a little over kill.

i was planing on keeping the XCR barrel. id like to upgrade it some day but for now it meets my requirements and budget.

i went with the .338 because i have always had a fetish for that caliber. i also like the idea of being to drop almost anything out to extended range.

I would try it without the brake first.
What weight do you anticipate for the end product?
I had a Remington 700 Classic and shill say if I could only have one rifle it would be a 338 WM. Do you plan on hunting with this rig as well?
 
why would you recommend trying it without the brake first?(all tho that was my idea) the end weight should be about 12 to14lbs loaded. and i do plan on hunting with this weapon system

If you do go hunting with it don't call it that in front of your hunting buddies unless you want to get laughed at. The correct term would be "gun" or if you want to get real fancy, "rifle". :D
 
With this rig, I think you will find 250gr MK or Lapuas to max out the case capacity. Should shoot well and certainly but a big hurt on any grass eater within range.

In time, you may decide to change the barrel and I would suggest you look at a 7RM and the 180gr Bergers. I have shot this bullet for a while and just started testing my new 7RM barrel.

Initial results are very promising and the LR ballistics are superb.

For this case size, I feel the 7mm is the best of all worlds.

Enjoy your rifle.... there are no wrong projects...

Hey Jeff, sounds like a nice setup. Just curious why you chose the 338winmag instead of 338 RUM, as I'm thinking about doing a similar build.

This may sound "wrong" or "un-logical" but i went with the 338WM over the 338RUM simply because its a tried and tested round. its also a much older round (1958 i believe) compared to the 338RUM that was Produced in 2000. Also cost of ammo came in to play.

The .338 RUM isn't much better.

Funny, I've got a 5 gallon pail full of new .338WM brass, and I've never paid more than $35/50...
 
Jeff I have a mod70 winchester in 338winmag with no break on it. I also have a 270win. I would rather shoot the 338 than the 270. I find that the 338 has a different kind of recoil, instead of the snap from a 270 its more of a push. I recommend that you try it without the break (esspecially if thats what you were thinking ). If recoil is a problem then I would put a break on. Why build something your scared to shoot
 
I am having a 7mm rem mag custom build completed using a guillard barrel. I am hoping to get a stiller action and have a shilen trigger and a hs preceision stock. How accurate can we expect these to be?

What part were you "building/having built"?

This isn't really a "precison" rifle. This will be a hunting rifle with an expensive stock. If you want this to be a precision rifle, put your money into the barrel. Frankly, I would suggest the 338 Edge (300 Remington Ultra necked-up to 338 and ballistically near identical to a Lapua Magnum) , and I would suggest a 28-30" barrel either way.

If the parts aren't purchased just, just get an SPS with long action magnum bolt face (~$800) since you are not using the Remington stock anyway, and if you want the thing to live up to any sort of accurate long range potential, a factory barrel isn't going to do much for you.

The XCR is a $1200-1500 gun that shoots no different than any other Remington, and you'll be swapping out the part of the gun that costs the most.

My precision rifle has seen bear, deer, and varmint detail. This year it might be called upon for elk, moose, and goat. Depends on the effort I want to put forth.

I refrain from using Remington crap brass. Hot loads with long bullets such as TSX can cause the brass to bulge.

I find it to be awful brass for reloading. Just awful.
