First Precision Rifle - Please Don't Flame

I do bolt timing and it costs very little. Send me a pm to discuss.

when done these actions run very smooth and light.

As to accuracy, you need to bed the action properly. From there sub MOA with good bullets and handloads is the norm.

I definitely like the freedom these actions give me and the performance for little money is superb.

I like Jerry's gun. I am building a 338 Edge on a Savage 111 magnum action. You can build a precision gun or buy one. It depends on what you want. I want something no one else has. I will be posting pictures when I am done.

I never advise to build on a Rem 700 action unless the guy is not serious. If he wants a decent rifle fine but if he wants a precision rifle I would never recommend a 700 action as a base. The action needs too much work by a competent gunsmith. I do them all the time and know the costs. After I true the action, true the bolt, possibly bush the firing pin and tighten the shroud, the bolt still slops around inside the action. If one wants to tighten the bolt up then its more work or another bolt from PT&G. Add these costs up compared to a new custom action. If you already have an action and want a serious rifle, sell that action and get a good one. Another piece of advise would be to buy an action that is IN STOCK. It isn't extremely important which action it is so long as it fits your desires but do you want to wait 8 months? If you want a tactiacl rifle for fun, buy a factory rifle. My two cents anyhow, having fun is the most important. However, I seem to notice the guys that are nailing the center are having the most fun. Funny about that.

The PGW prices are quite fair in my opinion, it is a lot of rifle with the absolute best workmanship and components. In fact, $4800 for a Coyote with custom paint, A5 stock, brake, mag, bottom metal, fantastic action, scope rail, most likely warranty which you would never need, serious look cool factor not to mention a piece of Cdn military kit everyone wants and a boatload of respect. For an ex military guy I would say jump all over this like a prom date.

I still think he wants a PGW and should save his money for it. You will never be happy or somehow feel empty inside because you didn't go with your gut feeling.
Everything about the T-Wolf spells what he wants and whether he gets a Rem or Savage he will attempt to make it look like the T-Wolf.

Some guys here like to build there own or have someone build their own custom rifle then a few months later sell it on the EE. Uh-Huh.

Just throwing it out there.

X2 Buy the PGW save up for optics.
Might take you longer to get out and shoot but you will not regret it.
I put Mark4's on mine and they are great scopes for the price.
I've seen 6x20 pop up on the EE for 1200$.
If budget is an issue get the coyote over the wolf. You will shoot it a lot more.

Well said Rob. I can build guns on a Rem 700 and make it shoot because I do all the work.
The custom action is the way to go for a top shelf platform and yes the guys nailing the center are the ones that shoot and enjoy it the most. The others remain in the background trying to sort problems out.
I can't compete against a beauty like the Coyote. The CNC machinery, custom finishes, etc. They are reasonably priced for the work you get and guaranteed to get the respect anywhere you show up with one. No contest!

This first question is what range to you want to get out of your rifle? If you go with the Timberwolf your going to be hitting 1500m no problem. What optic are you looking at for this beast? Also remember .338 lapua is not a cheap round.

I have considered another Savage, especially a 12 or 10FCP. And yes, I already reload.

I'm not sure what I want. I like the idea of a semi custom already since I am kind of fed up of tinkering with a piece here and a piece there and never a complete rifle ready to shoot cloverleafs. I initially bought my Savage 11 to do a build on but ended up just using it as my deer rifle instead. The PGW Timbrewolf I was eyeing up in the EE is gone already (you snooze you lose, and I almost had the wife convinced :D )

I am also eying up the Rem 5R but I am not sold on them yet. I have always wanted a M40A1 clone but the $8000 price tag of one on the EE really REALLY turned me off. Hence why I thought a PGW was a better alternative.

If you have always wanted an M40a1 build one. The parts are out there and there are many very skilled gunsmiths out there that can build you one. The details are all over the net if you look as to what is required. You can build a completely 100% spec rifle but use a different optic that you will use more and be happier with in the long run.

There are quite a few exact copies out there with the Unertl but very few of them get shot all that often as time has marched on and there are better optics out there. I have never seen a Unertl scoped rifle at a match even though I know quite a few people that have them.

TBA or US Optics both make an exact copy of the scope mount but in 30mm to use a modern scope. Put a Mark 4 or a Nightforce on it and go have fun. For under $5000 you could be up and running with an Optic and a Rifle that will last you a damn long time that you have always wanted.
