Hello,

I'm starting my research on my first 308 Precision Rifle and was hoping for some advise. I have been looking at the Remington 700 was wondering which model would be a good one to start with.

I can shoot up to 300 yds at my range

Thanks
B

Realistically any of the heavy barrel models will shoot about the same as they are all factory guns. SPS , SPS tactical , 5r are all decent choices . The price difference come from the stock and if the rifle is SS or just coated in a finish

Found these two do you think the M700 Stainless is worth 500 more and a better platform to buld on

M700 s/s 5r milspec 308, 24" s/steel 5r rifling, 1-11.25 twist, hs

700 sps tactical 308,4 shot,black overmolded stock, 20"bbl,

Thanks

5R is a great rifle is you plan on shooting now and building in the far far future.

If you plan on building soon- then what you’re really doing is buying a donor action, not a rifle. Don’t waste the money on the 5R. Find a cheap stainless 700 SPS and strip it. This route will save you a lot of money.

As far as the 5R vs the SPS Tactical, I would buy the 5R if you have the money. I think it is worth the premium cost over the SPS Tac. It has a better barrel and stock. Also, stainless is a plus out in the field. Krylon it if you don’t like the shine.

If you prefer the shorter barrel, I would still get the 5R and then have a smith chop and crown the barrel. Most it will cost is another $100 (probably less), but you will have a better crown than the factory job and a very good rifle that will keep you happy until you get bored and want to upgrade.

Can someone help me understand twist

The 5R is supposed to have a 1:11.25" twist, and the SPS in .308 a 1:10" twist.
Why the difference I do not know

Thank You

When a rifle has a faster twist for example 1:10 as aposed to 1:11.25 it can stabalize heavier bullets. The bullet Will spin once in the barrel every 10 inches of barrel length with a 1:10 twist and 1 time in 11.25 inches for every 11.25 inches of barrel. 1:11.25 twist is good for your 175 smk or 178 amax or bthp hornadys.

If you want to be shooting the bullets in the 200+gr range then the 1:10 would be the best. As for getting the sps or the 5R, The 5R hands down.

Thanks,

it seems odd to me that seemingly the better rifle is less accurate...I was hopeing the 5R would be more accurate and at a longer distance

I've got a 5R with only 20 rounds down it...just waiting for some time to head out and do more than make noise at a local indoor range. I'm looking forward to starting at 100 yards and quickly get out to 500+ with it! :D

To be clear:
5R: 1/11.25
SPS ACC-SD: 1/10
SPS Tac/P/LTR/XCR's: 1/12

A faster twist is normally preferred. That being said, I wouldn't choose a faster twist over stainless steel. Barrels are bound to be worn out and changed. The action is forever.

Of course, a lot of people like cm steel...
