First Range trip with new CZ550 375

Well I just have to say it's a keeper! I was not expecting a lot due to the fact I am not set up to load for the 375 yet and just took a box of fed 270g soft points to throw down range. I was surprised it did as well as it did. I was shooting from one of the block rests off the bench that our range supplies to sight her in. I pulled the first shot, wasn't sure what to expect but the recoil was a fair amount less than I was expecting. I find my .45-70 guide gun more punishing with heavier loads. Don't get me wrong I can feel a bit after 15 off the bench and a few off hand, but nothing serious. Anyway here is a pic of my last 3 shot group off the bench at a 100. The first two were right on top of each other then the third went high, but better than what my 06 doest with the feds(bottom pic).

Here is what my new model 70 does with fed 150's. It never really liked them for factory ammo. If I switch to win silver tips the groups tighten nicely. Need to take some time and do some loading I guess.

All and all though, I love that 375! Handles great and is a blast to shoot, literally!

Split Stock

Tell me Mr. KO, did you glass bed your 375 CZ 550?

I have the same rifle. It does not have cross bolts. It has a beautiful stock and I would hate to see it damaged. I have read that a CZ 550 should be glass beded to preserve the stock. Any thought on that?

Thanks

Post pics of the rifle. Looks like it wants to shoot pretty badly. The 375 H&H is a beautiful medium bore that will do anything asked of it and not punish you badly.

I haven't heard any thing about bedding, mine is cross bolted though. I haven't done a thing to it except throw the scope on with the rings and base that came with. I would like some type of QD system with a vx 3, but not this season. Sorry the photos don't do the wood justice from a black berry.

I would like to know if there is anything that should be done. I would hate to see the stock get damaged as well. As for now she is all as it came from factory.

I agree. I was expecting worse(have never shot a 375 before)but it really wasn't any worse in my opinion than my old 7 mag was. Of course I have put on a few pounds myself over the last 10 yrs so it could just be me. Going to get some range time over the next month, then we'll see if we'll go after some elk together.

I just got mine about 3 weeks ago and I LOVE IT!!! Recoil is alot better than what I was expecting. I shot 28 rounds last weekend to find the best groups and found that made my shoulder a little tender. Only problem is that I had open sights at the time. I got a Bushnell Trophy XLT scope and the Leupold Rings are in the mail. I can't wait to see how it shoots once I put glass on it.

My best group was about 3.5-4 inches with open sights at 100 yards. Using 300gr Hornady BTSP on top of 66.8gr of RL15 (Approx 2400fps according to Hornady manual)

I also thought it was quite a shooter right from the get go!

Nice! Did you order a QR base or rings? I would like the option of using the express sights with out too much hassle but not sure which to go with. Also, what power scope did you go with? I went with a Burris ff-II 2-7. I was impressed with the clarity, but the reticle is a bit heavy at 200 yrds on paper.

I went with just a regular set ot of rings. I always leave the wrench for the rings under the foam in my gun case. Should something happen to the scope I just need to take a rip up to camp and take off the scope. I went with a 3-9X40mm and the DOA reticle is nice and thin.

Have you tried your gun with open sights yet? I don't know if it's because of the 300gr bullets I'm shooting or what but I have to use the 300 yard tab on the express sight to get the right elevation at 100 yards.

I haven't tried the express sights yet. Just threw the scope on, bore sighted then sighted the same way I do my 06(dead on at 50, about an inch high at 100). I was surprised to see how much drop there was at 200, but that may have been the shooter rather than the rifle(fired 3 of in a hurry at the end of the day, had to get back to town)

Use the warne QD rings for the BRNO/CZ 19 mm dovetail. They work very well.

Not so elegant - but very strong.

With the cross bolts in and the front lug present - I would likely only relieve immediately behind the tang a bit and go hunting with one of the best firearms made!

Thanks for the advice on the rings. I'm going to check that out. Forgive the stupid question, but how would you relieve behind the tang? I haven't done really anything with bedding at all but want the stock to hold together for sure.
Thanks again for thje advice.

I would also take a first aid kit to the range if you are going with a bushnell trophy on your 375, I would not want that scope on my 375. Wonderful rifle however.

A little file or even a little scaping of the wood with a pen knife or small file above and behind the rear action hole. Just so the rear of the tang does not rub at that point of the stock.
Or a little GENTLE dremel tooling will remove an 1/8 inch or so of wood at most.

The tang is the metal potion of the action that sticks back the furthest. You can see it laying in your stock looking down (sorry if you know this ---)

The tang sometimes acts as a wedge when it slams back a fraction and if the wood-metal there is too tight it may split.

The 2 cross bolts and the relieved tang should be all you need with a 375HH. And if your CZ has the front bbl lug and screw into the lower front bbl -- thats plenty

You've got a great big game rifle in a great cartridge there, KO.

I suspect with a little fine tuning and personalizing of your rifle and loads, you'll be getting great results for many years.

Thanks for the advice! I will check out the fit on the tang. Mine does have the dual cross bolts as well as the front lug.
I like the idea of those rings and will be taking a look for a set for sure. The burris I have on there now has plenty of eye relief, I actually have it set back a bit far but it lines up well enough for me. What's the length of that barrel Geologist? It looks great. Did you have it cut down?
I am looking forward to working up some loads, so far I'm not impressed with what the shops carry for factory loads around here. Really only fed power shok I was shooting.
Thanks again for the comments and advice. This has been one of the most fun rifles I have purchased to date for some reason.
