First red rifle what say you?

I am getting that warm & fuzzy feeling.
the first time i shot a centre fire rifle was the SKS last sunday. no joke.
I can hit paper at 40 yards... it's a fun firearm! get one... then get one of all the others for a complete set!

IMHO... get an SVT-40 AND a Mosin Nagant first.
Both are available for a reasonable cost ($500 for both) at my local Canuck Tire.
Nothing says "Hello" quite like a 7.62x54r FMJ or the more powerful soft point hunting ammo !!!
You can get deals on FMJ from a number of the above merchants. In fact, I have 400 rounds of Chinese milsurp arriving today from SFRC.

Mosin Nagant.
My first was a mosin. I have an SKS, an SVT and several .22's but my favorite one that i keep going to is my M44 mosin. I love that kick in the pants it gives you. If I want to spend a little more time at the range without regretting it the next day, the SKS is a hoot.
Uh oh you could be heading down a road of serious addiction! Depends what you want the gun for plinking? or maybe even hunting? The SKS's are danm cheap and ammo is so incredibly cheap it makes for a good plinker and overall fun gun right out of the box. If you go with a 91/30 mosin its probably going to be covered in cosmoline so your going to want to get rid of that first, then if your like me you'll strip the stock and refinish it. In my experience it was more of a project gun, which I really enjoyed! (it was my first firearm ever). Or of course theres the SVTs, m38s, m44s which all use the same cartridge (and the 91/30) so if you buy one and get the red bug and you buy another variant or version you have two or three or four rifles chambered for the same cartridge. SKS is a good starting point, probably one of the most reliable semi autos ever built if they didn't F-up the magazine pin when they imported it to Canada. That's usually easy to fix. I've never used the VZ, but. I was shooting a couple of CZ's until my buddy's sold them both to Mike from Canmore. It's a neat design, I've heard of teething issues on the earlier VZ, but that might be mostly sorted out by now, not much complaining as of late. If you must have interchangeable mags, spend the extra on the VZ. All the ones I've seen for the SKS are kinda finicky and awkward, better off cutting a couple stripper clips to five rounds IMO.

You can get a SKS, a Mosin, and ammo for both for the cost of a VZ... Only reason to go for the VZ is if you intend to shoot black rifle events with it (detachable mags). If you do go with a VZ I suggest you stay with the 7.62x39 versions. IMHO it seems like they never quite ironed out the .223...
