First red rifle what say you?

I can only find the 7.5" and 18.6" in stock
Nuts
7.5" is too short to do the wood treatment
18.6" is too long to look perfect...
Hmm. Decisions decisions :)

I went in to grab an SKS as my first red, ended up walking out with a Mosin 91/30 an the SKS. the SVT I bought the next week of Weimerjack, he sells really nice ones on the exchange. So yes, you should plan for them all once you get one.

Can't beat a surplus SKS. Cheap to buy, cheap to feed, easy to clean..... What more could you ask?

Without a doubt get an SKS first. They are as cheap as 150, but usually around 2. They go bang every time and are lots of fun too shoot. Whether you are a purist or like to dress it up, there are lots of options.

SKS: had one, I found the stock too small but it's fun to shoot, very simple and you can get a Tapco or else if you found the stock too small. Truck load of after market accessories. Tons and tons of cheap ammo.

Mosin 91/30: You can ALMOST disassemble the entire rifle with a flat head screw driver, very simple and robust design. The ammo is just a little more expensive than the SKS (still about 30 cents or less the round). Very easy to do a trigger job. Accurate but not Remington 700 accurate. Lot of after market accessories. A bit long but you get used to it. Some are just 100$!

Make yourself a favor and buy both

you can disassemble everything on the Mosin with the supplied bayonet :)

Still hunting for the perfect 15" CobraGT yours is nice but I want a different look and don't want to lowball yours as you have aftermarket parts... good luck with sale man!

1951 Russian sks. I guess they are easy to clean but I find it time consuming. Maybe I'm picky but I spend like a good half an hour stripping and cleaning it after every use. I make sure I shoot no less than a couple hundred rounds so that the time spent cleaning it is justified. That corrosive residue gets everywhere. Even if you can't see it you can bet it's there. Wipe your springs.

If I were the OP, I'd buy a SKS, SVT-40, and Mosin-Nagant M44 or 91/30, plus a crate of ammo for each, and I think he'd still stay under a grand.

Just barely over but it gets you thinking. Either by a single Vz 58 and a crate of ammo. Or buy an SKS, SVT-40, Mosin Nagant, a crate of 7.62x39, and 7.62x54r for pretty much the same price.

Id pick this option. Those SVT-40 won't be available packed in grease in gun shops forever. The reason why I have two of each.
