Hi there
Just received my first Rem 700 SA, it has been customized. My question is the action screws only go in about 2.5 full rotations, it looks like it is only threading in about half way, which isn't very far.
I checked my Savage, screws go in about 6 full rotations and my Tikka about 3.5 full rotations. Is this a potential issue? Should I source some longer screws.
Thanks in advance

The front screw should not go through the action as it will contact the bottom bolt locking lug (it should be very close to 4 turns to be perfect), the rear screw should stop short of protruding through the tang. If the screws snug up tight it only takes a couple of threads to hold it in place. You can remove the top metal and see how far the front screw protrudes through the stock...

I removed the action and it would take about 5 full rotations for the front screw to protrude and interfere with the bolt so it only goes about half way. The rear screw only grabs about half way also, we'll short of protruding. It is a custom stock, bedded, it seems to be a quality job with everything flush and fitting nicely. Just think the action screws should be grabbing a little more. Would give me more comfort.

Check to see if the action has been lifted via bedding job - the bottom of the recoil lug should have clearance (.004" minimum). I have a lifted action on a 700 (taboo these days) and the OEM screws work fine - and its the one of the most accurate rifles in the safe.

Any recommendations where I could find longer screws?
Thanks

Someone on EE sells longer action screws for $5 (?) +shipping for the pair but I guess that's the price to pay for someone doing the sourcing for you. If you check some of the specialty hardware stores, you should be able to find 1.062 x 16 tpi (1-1/16x16tpi) bolts.

Aftermarket long screws cost about $15 from Brownell's... so anyone selling them for $5 is losing money.. Non gun related cap screws are a pain in the ass... the head are too large, they don't fit the bottom metal, and the hex wrench size if ridiculous and they need to be cut to length as well.
