First Restricted NZ85b review

So here is my first pistol and my first review. Keep in mind I don't know jack about pistols at this point so this is mostly first impressions.

I have virtually no experience with shooting pistols except for 10 years ago at the range an RCMP officer let me take his S&W for a drive while he was practicing for his qualifying. I do however have a lot of experience with rifles and reloading.

Anyhow I did the usual newb pondering what I should get. I bounced from 1911'a to Ruger MKII's to revolvers. There isn't a store within 5 hours drive from here that sells pistols so I wasn't able to fondle many but I knew I liked CZ's. I almost jumped on a new CZ85 but figured "hell I will own lots of pistols in my life I can always upgrade later'.

So I jumped on an NZ85 from Marstar. Ordered Jan 5th transfer completed Jan 12th (BC) then 11 days to get here by a 3 legged Canada post mule.

I haven't fired it yet and won't be able to for a couple weeks but the LTATT is here and I am all set once I have a chance.

It does however fit my hand nicely, the controls work well. It seems to have a very nice single action trigger pull. I am not sure where these sharp edges are supposed to be but I haven't found any yet. The machining on the outside is quite nice I think but I am set up to do Cerakoting and I may do that in a year or so just to have something to mess with and give it more of an authentic CZ look. The internals are machined roughly but everything seems to be fitted well and it has no rattles. The grips are not very grippy. I may have to try and track down some nice wood grips for it as well.

For something to learn on and be able to mess with and not care if I screw it up I am so far very pleased. I will post a range report in a couple weeks.
 
I can see the magazines might be a source of a problem.

They drive a hole through the mags to stop the follower from allowing more than 10 rounds in the mag.

This however leaves a terrible burr.

That grabs the magazine spring.

But nothing a little bit of file work shouldn't be able to improve.

If you don't want to go to jail you better leave the mag alone!!! :eek:

Please do not file that magazine!

Doing so would allow more than 10 rounds to fit in the mag making it a prohibited device!

Magazines are restricted to 10 rounds for all handguns in Canada. Please be careful.
 
I'm well aware of that mlehtovaara. I was not suggesting to totally remove the burr and create anything illegal. Just to polish it up a bit so its not binding up the magazine spring to improve function but still retain the 10 round capacity.

I think the OP was pretty clear in what he meant.
 
I did a fast trip to the range this morning. No pictures. I put 70 rounds through it and didn't have any sort of malfunctions. I found the single action trigger to be very nice and crisp. I don't notice the take up at all.

I have 4 magazines for it. 2 of them I can only fit 7 rounds into. One I can fit 10 into if I really grunt. The 4th magazine I can fit 10 rounds into with out trouble. It appears the hole in the magazine is binding up the spring and not allowing it to compress properly to fit the 10 rounds. Easy enough to fix.


"How does it shoot?" some of you may ask. I have nothing to compare it to. In my hands it shoots about 4 inch's left at 10 yards but shoots a grouping that I think is totally acceptable given my experience level. It seemed to shoot accurately enough but I was trying different holds on it to try to see if how I was handling the firearm was affecting where it was printing. And mostly since it is my first restricted I just wanted to hear it go "bang bang" a few times. So grouping was way down the list of priorities today.
 
I made another range trip today. This time I shot off a sandbag rest and was easily able to shoot a 3 inch group at 25 yards off a rest. With out a rest my trigger control sucks and I pull shots off to the left, but if I focus I can get something of a group on target.

I have put 160 rounds through it now but had one stoppage on a Remington JHP that jammed feeding into the chamber. So far I like this little rig but I am now drooling over a Browning Buck Mark and a S&W 686.

No worry about the grouping and don't use a sandbag, learn a good griping and fire slowly, focus on the front site for pistol shooting. Forget a .22 and get your 686 first, one of the greatest revolver.
