First revolver recommendations

For a 1st revolver i also recommend a .38sp/.357mag. S&W 586/686 or Ruger GP100. They can shoot cheap and accurate .38sp loaded from puff load to the hot +p+, and also mild .357 load for plinking, or hot load for great fireballs.

Careful how you word that, 9mm shouldn't be fired in a .357/.38 Sp. cylinder, they are not interchangeable.

Very likely dangerous, I just removed the cylinder from my Blackhawk .357 and a 9mm drops right in with enough of a rim that somebody might try to fire it.

Very bad idea.

BTW, that Blackhawk .357 6 1/2" barrel is some kind of sweet!!

I have the Convertible and it has a different cylinder for .38 and 9mm. Actually the 9mm in a .38 cylinder I doubt the hammer would strike the primer. Never tried it though. The way the convertible works is that the cylinder is machined to hit the end of the brass on a 9mm round, stops the round at the right depth. I had some hand loaded 9mm brass that were a little crimped and they would not fire in the convertible. I'm not saying the setup is perfect, moon clips are better, but it is what it is and it does work. Most of my revolvers are 6 inch versions. I have had a 5 inch now sold and I have a 4 5/8 inch new in the box that I need to try out. I think the longer bbl gives you a little more weight out front that isn't a bad thing and the longer bbl gives the round more speed which is also good. The shorter bbl is a little easier to handle I guess.

The 45Colt/45acp combo works really well as both cartridges now enjoy the same diameter of bullet. Both the 9MM and 45acp head space off the case mouth. Ruger machines the auto round cylinders to SAMMI spec length for the cases. Put a roll crimp on the rounds and they might be able to slip by the ledge cut into the cylinder. If they do the firing pin is likely to push the round into the cylinder and not fire off the primer.

One of the guys at our club has the convertible om 357/9MM and he doesn't get the accuracy out of the 9MM off the bench like he does with the .38/.357 even using lead boolits.

I have the 45Colt/45acp convertible and haven't found any noticeable difference in accuracy. POI doesn't change significantly either using either cylinder. I am sure it does differ just not in my hands using my eyes.

Take Care

i recommend you get both smith and wesson model 17 (22lr) and model 14 (38spl) , the two guns are very similar to each other and both are very accurate. get used to shooting those then shoot a group with a ruger .youll see what people are saying about the trigger. rugers are good, theres no question.smith and wessons are just better

I concur with most of the advice above, but I wouldn't discount the Model 10, 14 and 15 .38 special revolvers. The Model 14/Combat Masterpiece is one of the finest firearms I've ever used. While it's true you don't get to enjoy the roar and fireball of the .357, you're not going to stick with just one revolver for very long anyways. The S&W .38 specials tend to sell for a little less money, but are worth every penny. Elegant, durable, excellent triggers and amazing finishes. What's not to like?
