First revolver ?????

S&W 686 in 4.2 or 6 or S&W 629 with 5 inch barrel. You can shoot special if you want to shoot lots and don't want to deal with too much recoil, or you can ramp it up and have some fun with the magnum loads. The 38/357 is quite a bit cheaper ($0.40 - $0.50 for 357/38 vs $0.80-$1.00 for 44) but 44 is cooler. I have the 629 4.2 and I love it. I think it is one of the most versatile, modern classics (and my homage to Elmer Keith).

All depends on what the intended use is.
Personally, my revolvers are for pure S&G's (usually finishing off my range session)so if I had to choose one it would be my 460V. Shoots 4 different rounds and feels/looks BadA$$...

i got my first revolver a few months ago. S&W 686 stainless .357 with a 4.2 barrel. get one they are SWEET!

Since you are already in IDPA, I suggest you stick to a 4.2'' bbl length model. Either the S&W 686 (excellent) or Ruger GP100 (okay but may need some tuning)

That way when you shoot a match it will be IDPA compliant.

IDPA with revolvers is way too much fun. I am shooting the entire 2014 season in SSR. Can't wait!

(don't even look at (or google image) the chiappa rino, you may need to clean your eyes out. With bleach. ;)

Once you have one good revolver you will find out that they are superior to semis. Than you will need to have more than one. The .38Special/.357Mag is the most popular out there. I would stay away from just .38S as they are lighter duty. Ruger makes good single actions and double actions. These guns new are around $600 and up for the single actions. The older S&W .38/.357 are good guns and not expensive, many are old police guns. Good luck in your hunt.

For my first revolvers - I ended up picking up a Smith 19 and a Smith 17 that were sold as a set - both beautiful firearms - I am new to revolvers but think that bar has been set pretty high with these two and you will not go wrong getting either.

Start with 586/686, easy to find and sell if you don't like it.
Add a 629, time to reload
Conclude with 500, have to reload with factory being about 4 bucks each.
