My girls are 11 and 9 are taking an interest in shooting. I would like to get 1 or 2 22 rifles for them. Right now they are using my ruger sr-22 rifle at the range. But I would like to get them a bolt action rifle with a magazine so they can slow things down and learn properly.

Any advice for a decent rifle for these young girls. I want to spend enough to get decent quality and at the same time not break the bank.

thx much!

I have been looking at the

Savage Arms MARK II 22LR in Mark II- GY : Walnut finished hardwood stock / Adjustable notched rear sight, bead front sight / Blued bolt action / OAL: 37.75" / Bbl.: 19" / Wt.: 5 lbs. / Mag. Cap.: 10 rds. / Youth model.

For around 209.99

I think the rifle you mentioned would be a superb choice, and one they can grow into. My own kids have been shooting my .22s for some time, a Savage 93FV, a Norinco Backpacker, an Anschutz 1450...and while none of them are overly big guns, they struggled with the length of pull and weight. That Savage youth model might have been a good answer for them, not sure...but I opted for a Savage Rascal. My daughter is 11, my youngest son is 8...and they both love this rifle. My daughter (pictured below) could probably handle something just a little bigger now, but she's not interested. It "feels" like it's meant for a younger person and she's picked-up on that. Makes it feel like it's hers, since I never shoot it. Everything is scaled-down, and the single shot REALLY makes every trigger pull matter. A box of a 100 CCI anything really takes some time. So, imagine the time it took to punish a pop can to that degree! :) I couldn't be happier with this little rifle, and the Accutrigger is superb. I think it was about $180, and was available is bright colors as well.

what about a Cooey 39? you can find 1 in good condition for under $50...

single shot bolt and you have to #### the firing pin...
-seems pretty safe, relieable and accurate too!

buy a box of shorts or subsonics and you don't even need earplugs... quiter then my .22 pellet gun!

lol.

I just gave my old cooey 39 to my father in law on fathers day as a fathers day gift. I really wasnt thinking there. But didnt think my girls would be interested. OOPS!

I have a Savage Cub, pink laminate stock, that my granddaughter loves to shoot. Accutrigger, aperture sight, sized right, single shot, totally reliable and accurate, scope-able...absolutely no complaints about this gun. It's definitely produced more smiles-per-dollar than any gun I've ever had.

I have a thompson hotshot, BL22 micro and a CZ scout. The hotshot is a great beginner rifle, I tried the cooey, but they didn't have the strength to pull the hammer back. I didn't like passing them a cocked and loaded rifle. My older daughter(9) is quite strong and handle the BL22 like a champ. I also like the exposed hammer on the BL22 so I can see if she has loaded it. The deal I have with her is she gets the scout when she gets really good with the browning. I also have a cooey 39 and 60 with a shortened LOP in funky colors.

Yes...the Cooeys. I bought a 75 (sight unseen) thinking it might be a decent choice, the bloody thing was almost as long as my 12ga. shotgun! Very much an adult-sized rifle. Recently, I held a Cooey 750 (similar to a 39?) and WOW...that would have been a better choice. Small, compact...except (as Aaron touched-on) you need adult-strength to pull that cocking knob back. My daughter could only do it 5-6 times before the effort was too much. The Rascal has cured all these woes. Fun little gun for kids.

I just gave my father-in-law my Cooey 39 last week! He loved it.

Good call, I completely forgot how hard that little hammer is to pull back... Mine was the same, I agree, too much for a youngster without them getting frustrated.

A smooth bolt action is probably the best bet as many have stated.

And a plus to that is the gun will load and function exactly like a full size bolt rifle, so they will already know how to safely use 1 when its time to upgrade in the spring to that 300wm.

I bought a savage cub [pink laminate stock] for my 3 grandaughters[6,8 and 10]-and they love it.Big bonus is the colour.I figure the size,3 1/2 lb weight, single shot, peep sight, accutrigger all add up to just about the perfect rifle for kids.Nothing worse than a heavy rifle that doesn't fit and a bad trigger to put off kids from shooting
