First Rifle - Having Trouble Deciding

first rifle i had was marlin .22 didnt like it
i got 1022 excellent rifle
now i got 5 597 rifles i have no idea why besides the fact that i can shoot it amazingly accurate...like the feel. But this is not my advice...
here is what to do.Decide what you want to do with the rifle... research what is good out there i guess you did it that. Then go to the store and try what feels good.... dont buy something cause its cheaper. Wait and invest extra money to get what you really want cause you dont want to get to have regret. many of us went this way and lost cash on it.

my first .22 was a marlin 925 SS bolt action (or something close to that, they change their descriptions so much) and it was accurate as all heck especially for a "cheaper" rifle.

if you are just starting out, definately go with a bolt gun, semi-auto's are fun guns, but they can be finicky with ammo, and accuracy can vary greatly, and just starting out you want a good reliable gun so that you want to keep firing it:)

btw, the only .22 i own at the moment is a ruger 10/22, but modding a 10/22 gets expensive fast, so be forewarned:cool:

and as others have mentioned get a good scope, you may sell the gun and buy others, but you can always keep the scope and remount it to a new one.

CZ 452!

you will soon get bored of a semi and want something more accurate, save up and get the better rifle

Honestly, it's tough to go wrong with the rifles you are talling about (from other reviews). I have a stock 10/22 and I am very happy with it. It may not be the most accurate but it is very good and I love the 30 round mag for fun time. Look at them all and buy what you like, you'll always have time to try the others or something completely different. Think of it like your first girlfriend; it will always bring back fond memories but you will move on happily.

Your are spot on with Savage MkII FV - I have one and its the most fun one can get out of 22.
Out of semi's you guessed it right with rem597 cuz I also have one and its way too much fun - I won a few local informal "4p" matches with it.

But then again - whatever you buy now ain't going to be your only 22 anyway so it doesn't really matter. I say buy anything and be keen one and enthusiastic as you are now and over the time you will end up owning exactly what you want.

I have a 10/22 and a CZ 452-2E....love them both.. zero problems with either.... I think I paid just over 300 for the cz in 04... I see they have gone up since then..... (because they are sooo good).
No..I wont sell you mine..its a keeper

When cleaning rifles, does anyone know if the way the C7 is cleaned is that same as for all other rifles? I've heard that you can really screw up a barrel by doing something stupid so I'd rather not ruin my rifle.

Too true...

there is an unwritten law stating that the first rifle in one's life is to be a 30-06 :stirthepot2:

That rule's converted to .303 BR if you're Commonwealth.....;)

I'll tell you the very same thing I tell anyone else willing to listen:

Your going to buy a few guns, there's no doubt about that. At the very least i think it's a safe bet that you, like most others will own a centerfire rifle, a rimfire rifle and a shotgun. Most people will have no qualms dropping $500 or a bit better on a shotgun. You will probably shoot this the most if your a hunter. Then most folks will drop $1000+ on a hunting rifle. You will shoot this the least. Then most folks want the cheapest .22 rifle they can buy, however they will shoot this more in one year then he will the shotgun or rifle in ten. My advice to you is to buy the very best .22 rifle you can afford. A good .22 is an investment you will never regret. If down the road you select a rifle like the Remington 710 or 770, it will do you fine because as I said before you won't shoot it nearly as much. And somehow it developed this internet leperosy, where people are repulsed by the mere mention of it. Most of those bashing it never touched one. Those that have them fill their freezers with them.

As for what gun to choose that will be up to you. Yes the Savage is a fine rifle, a little crude but very effective. The 597 is in my opinion garbage. Many have them and like them, but my experiance with them is poor. They are accurate, but unlike the 770 they are an autoloader which never wants to autoload. If you can afford a CZ by all means make the investment. If the bolt action thing doesn't do it for you look at the levers. There is nothing more fun then walking a fenceline with a .22 lever. The 10/22? Not a big fan even though one still lives in my safe. All I can suggest is to look at as many as you can, pick one you think will be fun and have at it. The whole idea behind the .22 is to have fun, not keep up with the next guy or to try and look as mall ninja as possible. It will teach you to shoot well and if properly selected, will teach your children the same. Would you rather one day hand down a beautifully crafted classic arm or a Krinker Plinker to your children and grandchildren? Good luck and have fun.
