Damn...I like your choices fir a first firearm. All I had was a broke down cooey repeater that used as a single shot. That old cooey put alot of grouse on the table though, kept us well fed through some tough times.
I love savage rifles cause of the accuracy. Tried a friends tikka...wow what a beautiful gun and the bolt was as slick as pike snot, could not even shoot moa though. I still buy one though. Love how smooth the action was and great triggers on those tikkas too.
I bet you could teach me a thing or two!
I prefer a quality 2-7x33 over a 3-9x40.

7x is plenty for 300m hunting.
the .308 is a fantastic all around cartride for moose/bear/deer/etc. the savage riifles are value priced and accurate.
