Proline? Crap, never been there. Bass Pro opens in a month or two, but WSS and Russels will give you a good selection and fair prices. If you can get help at one of them that is.....

Damn...I like your choices fir a first firearm. All I had was a broke down cooey repeater that used as a single shot. That old cooey put alot of grouse on the table though, kept us well fed through some tough times.
I love savage rifles cause of the accuracy. Tried a friends tikka...wow what a beautiful gun and the bolt was as slick as pike snot, could not even shoot moa though. I still buy one though. Love how smooth the action was and great triggers on those tikkas too.

All the info you need is on this board. Dont always take the advice of a single person, cause there are lots of opinions not based on fact around here. Savage rifles have a huge following for a reason, you will do well with a savage. If I could make a suggestion that if the extra weight doesnèt bother you consider the 10fp with the heavy bbl. I have on in .308 and it is wicked accurate. You can also use it for tac sniper longrange type shooting if you ever get into that.

the .308 is a fantastic all around cartride for moose/bear/deer/etc. the savage riifles are value priced and accurate.

X2 on the scope and gun i like x7s and , use them or 1.5x5 on most of my hunting carry rifles, and have one on my favorite 308 win ULite 70.. Not yet has the 308 LET ME DOWN i do not expect it will, or I would not carry one.
You can not beat the low profile light scopes and you will know what was said above if you carry a gun a bunch in the bush.
Go to a few gun shops and look at all the rifles you can. Find one that has a stock that fits you, and is comfortable. Then find a USED one in a calibre you want. My first rifle was a Rem 700 BDL with a Burris Sig. scope that I got for $700. It was in great shape and shot just fine. Canadian Tire on MacLeod still has a used gun section, I scored a pump 12 ga for $150 and a friend scored a recently 'smithed 7mm on a mauser action for $250.

Just an idea for Starter kit on a budget:
- Call or send an email to Anthony at Tradeex (site sponser/dealer) he can set you up with a decent bolt action in 30-06 wearing a respectable wood stock with scope bases installed. Probably shipped to your door for under 400$ or even 300$ depending on what you choose.
- Pick up a lightly used 2-7x32xBushnell 3200 from the Optics Exchange here .
A note on 3200 's:
I was amazed to see to see that my Bushnell 3200 was nearly back to zero after the rifle was dropped during last hunting season (scope first I might add). QD rings removed from bases (but not from scope) and reinstalled, just tested it yesterday.
