First rifle

Sporterized Enfields with the metal buttplate are!

Seriously though, anything with a hard end is gonna bruise, unless it's a rimfire or something. A recoil pad takes most of the bite out of just about any standard cartridge, until you start going way beyond what's required to hunt game. ;)

Hmph. Never noticed hehe ;)

Which all boils down to the point that everybody handles recoil differently. Just gotta find out what your limits are!

If all you are going to do is punch paper for a year, buy a 223. If you like target shooting it will do just fine, a 9 twist is a little better for heavier bullets and a little distance. That avoiding getting a flinch and disliking recoil can ruin shooting. I grew up with a Husky 30-06 that rattled everyone's teeth and toe's. Not fun.
By next year you will be good enough to go to 7-08 or 308 with some comfort.
Although going 243 will get you by all the way thru.

My first rifle was a Remington 700 in .308 Win. I still have it. In retrospect, it was a good choice.

NAA.

I'm only 18, my first Rifle's were .22WMR in a Savage model, .303 Lee Enfield, and .308 Win. I would definitely recommend something towards the lower stem, such as a nice .243 where the barrel would not heat up so much. Personally I find that the barrels on the .303 and .308 heat up a fair bit, and they do not serve as well for long days on the range as well as the .243 or the .270.

I have browning BLR in .243 its a lever and is money for deer and is also fun and accurate for plinking. I also have an old 30-06 Parker hale which fits in the same category. The BLR is great for the bush though due to its compact design and light weight for the added punch though a 30-06 or .308 would be the way to go.
