Hey, I just purchased a Remington 700 SPS Varmint, and ive previously stated this in another post so I apologize for the repetitiveness.

Anyway, I took it out, had a good look then lightly wiped my fingerprints off the bolt and barrel with a cloth and stored it in my locked closet.

My main question is for cleaning, mainly rust prevention. Ill be purchasing a cleaning kit this weekend and some Sheath rust protection if I can find any.

So my question is, does anyone have a decent cleaning guide out there that I can read and become acquainted with so I can properly maintain my firearm?

Secondly, considering I just received it and don't plan on firing it until late December is there any need to clean it or at least wipe the outer parts and coat them with Sheath or some other oil?

Thanks for your help.

Get yourself a bore guide right from the start. This will enable you to push a swab through from the the receiver to the end of the muzzle. This will prevent damage to your muzzle crown and stop cleaning fluids from seeping into you receiver/trigger mechanism/bedding (you going to bed it right). Don't ram a cleaning rod down the muzzle, you could damage the crown and this will affect accuracy.

I too have just received a 700 varmint in 243. Its going to be a project so I won't be firing it for awhile. I detail cleaned everything then put a coat of oil on it. If you do the same just make sure to swap/wipe the bolt face, chamber and bore prior to firing.

Others here will sound off with their cleaning regiments soon I'm sure.

The Barrel is Chromoly steel and will rust. Using a good gun oil is a great way to store it, and store your gun muzzle-down.

Cleaning... many products that do a good job. Easiest product is Wipe-out. Get a good bore guide (Sinclair) and a good cleaning rod (Dewey). If using brushes, use best quality phosphor brush. Do not over-clean. Let the gun tell you when it needs to be cleaned.

Hmmm, I guess ill try youtube, but does anyone have a tutorial out there or guide as to how to clean and what to clean?
