First rimfire. 597 or 10/22?

Check any 10/22 you buy these days. QC has gone for crap since they have been pumping them out as fast as possible to keep up with demand. Find out who looks after warranty. The numerous issues i had with mine put me off ruger all together.

You are not alone. I've been at the gun store more than once, looking stuff over, was seriously considering dropping $$ on a Ruger 22/45 pistol, but then a voice at the back of my head said "Remember that piece of crap 10/22..."

It stays in the safe as a reminder of a bad purchase. Haven't bought anything Ruger since, and there's a few rifles/pistols that, by their design, I'd be interested in. I just keep bumping them further down the list and fill the needs with guns made by other manufacturers.

10/22 all the way, but as mentioned the QC as of late really has been dropping. My latest one had some mediocre machining, and the stock was not fitted to the end cap quite right (mannlicher stock). Maybe I'm biased though, I have a Honda Civic too ;)

Is it white with racing stripes and a 50LB whale tail to make it go much more faster? ;)

Either would be a fine choice. 10/22 has a good reputation. Despite all the hate, the 597 is a good rifle. Bought mine 6 years ago and have put many rounds through it with no issues. Great factory sights. Paid 189.99 brand new for it.

maybe you just got a lemon... my 10/22 (the 'sks of rimfire', 99% reliable but not very accurate) works great, my 22/45 is just as reliable and its accurate too!

Get the Ruger 10/22 and a few 25 round butler creek 'steel lips' for rapid fire mag dumping fun! and a Savage MII FVSR for 'value accuracy'

I love this guys video, just hilarious!

This is what i bought when i sold my POS 10/22. Best 22 (for the price)i have ever owned! Deadly accurate right out of the box. And the best part is, the thousands of rounds i bought to dump through the 10/22 will last me a lifetime with the savage!

Oh, I've no doubt I got a lemon... Which is what's actually soured me on Ruger. By design, the 10/22 is pretty solid. But the one I got, should never have made it past QC. There were some pretty obvious flaws.

I'll get over it eventually. In the meantime, there's a giant list of "guns, not made by Ruger" that are on my "list" (oh, list, you evil mistress, no matter how many items I check off, you just keep growing.)

As for a Savage...

No. I like guns with proper triggers. That blade safety crap drives me nuts, and I'm too old to change my mind about it. I know the Savages are great rifles, and hella accurate, and I've shot a few borrowed ones and really, really tried to get past that trigger... And I just can't.

For accuracy, I have a CZ-452 with a YoDave kit, and a mid 60's CIL/Anschutz 125. And they have proper triggers.

For the same reason, every time I try and like a Glock or an SR9 or other pistol with those whacky "safe action triggers" I only get about 1 or 2 mags in before I run home to my 1911.

I have both. I like both. Both are fun to shoot, light and largely reliable. The front sight on my 597 fell off week one so I had to put on a red dot. The big point of failure for both rifles is the magazines which despite the huge price tag attached to them up here are plastic junk. The 10/22 mags are better but still they produce regular stoppages.
Of the two I'd buy a 10/22 but spend the extra $100 and get the stainless model, even the new one seem to be made with some care and attention to detail.

No, no...the airplane wing doesn't make it go faster, it's for downforce on the rear wheels...even though it's FWD ;)

Mine's actually totally stock, a '96 CX (~2000 pounds) that after a little tuning up got me 43 MPG city/hwy combined.
Like the 10/22, everyone and their dog has one, but there's a reason that they do.

My 597 runs flawlessly has last shot bolt hold open and uses two guide rods. Got the remington 30 round mags for it work great loaded to 25. Only dislike is the take down for cleaning.

I know many people with the ruger. Didnt want to jump on the 10/22 wagon so went with the 597 and bought the 30rd mag. And cheaper never hurts. Love the fire sights, dislike disassembly. Have zero issues and IMO more accurate than the ruger. Very happy with it and glad I didn't get the ruger. It's ok to be different! Lol

I've had many 10/22s and by far the most fun you can have for a rimfire. Aftermarket parts and overall good quality. Seen a few issues with the 597 but they are getting better.

Do the charging handle of the 597's still fall out? The one on mine kept doing it ….good thing I shot it from the bench and not in the woods.

Mine doesn't fall out but it's not very tight. It snaps in and out. Part of my disassembly dislike. Will likely get looser everytime it gets dismantled I imagine. But so far so good. If it does ever fall out I'm sure I can shim it tight again and make it work.
